It is said that a restraint is usually attached to actual focus. Therefore, the main cultivation method for accomplishing samadhi is the cultivation of mindfulness, and mindfulness also has a definite way of holding. Therefore, when cultivating samadhi, if there is no firm conviction of cognition and one just dwells blankly, although a clear mind may arise, the clarity produced by the conviction of cognition will not arise, and thus powerful mindfulness will not arise. Therefore, even subtle dullness cannot be overcome, and it will only become a flawed samadhi. Without establishing other objects of focus such as deities, just cultivating the non-conceptual mind, one should also let the mind dwell without thinking about anything in any object. Remembering the instruction "Do not let the mind wander," one must then not be distracted. Not being distracted is also the same as mindfulness of not forgetting the object of focus, so it does not go beyond the scope of mindfulness cultivation. Therefore, that kind of meditation must also rely on mindfulness that produces the power of definite cognition. In order to eliminate the flawed sects, there is such a wrong view to be eliminated: As mentioned earlier, sharp awareness is highly praised, and it is thought that by striving to maintain non-conceptuality, even if there is not the slightest fault of dullness, but because agitation is too strong, it is seen that it is impossible to maintain the state of abiding continuously. Therefore, the sharpness of awareness is degraded, and the effort of diligence is also relaxed, and it is seen that the state of abiding arises quickly. Then, it is believed that this method is a great instruction, and it seems that they loudly proclaim, "Relaxation is the best meditation." This is a statement that does not distinguish between the arising of dullness and the arising of meditation. Because, flawless samadhi must have the two characteristics mentioned earlier, and merely the stable abiding of the non-conceptual mind is not enough. If that is the case, even if there is a turbidity of mind that has become confused, but because there is no dullness and there is a clear mind, it is thought that this is flawless samadhi. This seems to be a statement that does not distinguish between torpor and dullness, and these will be explained in detail below. Therefore, if one strives too hard and makes awareness too strong, although there is clarity, it is difficult to generate the state of abiding because agitation is too strong. If one cultivates too relaxed, although there is a state of abiding, it is easy to generate dullness.

Because the place is too large, there is no sharp clarity. Because it is neither too tight nor too loose, it is also very difficult to grasp the moderate degree of tightness and looseness. Considering the difficulty of generating samadhi free from sinking and excitement, the teacher Chandragomin said, "If you are diligent, excitement will arise, and if you abandon it, lethargy will arise. It is difficult to attain balanced entry in this way, so what is the use of disturbing my mind?" He said that diligence is too tight, and if you do that, excitement will arise. If you abandon the tightness and relax too much, lethargy will arise in the mind. Therefore, it is difficult to attain a balanced entry of the mind that is free from sinking and excitement and remains equally in reason. That is the meaning. Similarly, in the commentary by Buddha Shanti, it says, "Diligence here refers to entering with tightness due to manifest joy in the direction of virtue." It also says, "Having seen the fault of becoming excited, if you abandon that diligence and give up effort, the mind will become lethargic." So it is said. Also in the Confession and Praise, it says, "If you enter with effort, excitement will arise, and if you relax it, lethargy will arise. It is also difficult to practice on this middle way, so what is the use of disturbing my mind?" He said that. In its commentary it also says, "If you enter and strive with great effort and tightness, then the mind will become excited and distracted, so even if you destroy the effort, you will not find the abiding of the mind. Thus, because this is a fault, in order to avert it, if you relax the mind that enters with effort and give up effort, then due to faults such as forgetting the object of focus, lethargy and sinking will arise and occur in the mind." It is said very clearly. Therefore, it is said that it is difficult to attain the practice of the middle way that is free from the two extremes of sinking and excitement, or the samadhi of balanced entry in reason. Because if it is enough to just relax, there is no reason for difficulty, and it is said that lethargy will arise from that, so it is clear that it is not reasonable to practice samadhi in that way. For the mere clarity of a mind that is too relaxed is not enough, but the tightness of the way of holding is necessary, the noble Asanga said, "To abide in it and truly..."
