The main reason for the obstacles to impure accomplishment is that. Therefore, if one does not know well the subtle and coarse dullness and excitement, and does not understand the pure practice of samadhi that prevents the two after recognizing them, let alone vipassana, even calm abiding is impossible to arise, so those who are wise and aspire to samadhi should be proficient in that method. Among them, dullness and excitement are obstacles to the accomplishment of calm abiding. The recognition of obstacles and the actual method of prevention will be explained below, so here we will discuss the conditions conducive to the accomplishment of calm abiding, that is, the method of generating samadhi. Here, samadhi is the aspect of the mind being single-pointed on the object of focus, and it must be a continuous dwelling on the object. For this, one needs a method of not letting the mind wander from the fundamental object of focus, and two methods of knowing whether it has wandered and whether it will wander, the first is mindfulness and the second is awareness. The commentary on the Ornament of the Sutras says: Mindfulness and awareness are what bring one close, one prevents the mind from scattering from the object of focus, and the second knows well whether the mind is scattered. So it is said. If mindfulness weakens and one forgets the object of focus, one will be distracted and immediately lose the object of focus, so mindfulness of not forgetting the object of focus is fundamental. The way that mindfulness brings the mind close to the object of focus is: As mentioned earlier, after clearly determining the object of focus, when at least some appearance arises, by knowing it, one generates a strong grasping manner of holding tightly, and raises the alertness of the mind, without making any new speculations, one abides. Mindfulness is said in the Compendium of Topics: What is mindfulness? It is the mind's non-forgetfulness of familiar things, having the function of non-distraction. Thus, it is said to have three characteristics. Among them, the characteristic of the object of focus is: because mindfulness does not arise for unfamiliar things, it is said to be for familiar things, here referring to the appearance of the object of focus that was previously determined. The characteristic of the appearance or grasping manner is: the mind's non-forgetfulness, which refers to the aspect of the mind not forgetting that object, here referring to not forgetting the object of focus.

It is so. The way of not forgetting is: when others ask, or when one engages in contemplation on it, this object of focus is like this. It is not merely said to be able to remember what the lama has taught, but it is to remember that the mind is attached to the object of focus, without the slightest distraction. If one is distracted, then as soon as it arises, one loses mindfulness. Therefore, once the mind has been placed on the object of focus as before, generate the thought that it is attached to the object of focus in this way. Then, without newly contemplating, maintaining the continuity of that mind's strength without interruption is the crucial point of cultivating mindfulness. The distinction of function is: not allowing the mind to wander from the object of focus to other places. Thus, taming the mind by attaching it to the object of focus is taught by the example of taming an elephant. For example, it is good to tie an untamed elephant to a very strong tree or pillar with many very strong ropes, and train it as the elephant trainer does. If not, tame it by repeatedly striking it with sharp hooks and punishing it. This mind, like an untamed elephant, is also bound to the strong pillar of the object of focus mentioned earlier with the rope of mindfulness. If it cannot be made to stay there, then prick it with the hook of vigilance and gradually bring it under control. As it is said in the Essence of Madhyamaka: "If the elephant of the mind wants to stray, tie it to a strong pillar of focus, bind it firmly with the rope of mindfulness, and gradually subdue it with the hook of wisdom." So it is said. It is also said in the Middle Stages of Meditation: "The elephant of the mind should be attached to that very tree of focus with the rope of mindfulness and vigilance." So it is said. In the former quote, vigilance is said to be like a hook, and in the latter quote, it is said to be like a rope, but these are not contradictory. The actual thing that constantly attaches the mind to the object of focus is mindfulness, and vigilance also indirectly causes the mind to be attached to the object of focus, because it relies on vigilance to recognize sinking and excitement, or the transformation of sinking and excitement, and does not allow them to control it, but stays on the root object of focus. As quoted earlier, Master Vasubandhu also said: Both mindfulness and vigilance cause attachment to the object of focus. Because samadhi is accomplished by relying on mindfulness, mindfulness is like a rope, and the mind
