It is said with dual words. Therefore, first, focusing on one object and attaining tranquility, later one can also focus on many objects. As stated in the "First Stage of Meditation": "When the mind is made to be firmly held, then only focus on the distinctions of the aggregates and elements, etc., and expand on them." As it is also said in the "Exegesis of the Intention" and others: "The yogis have taught many aspects of focusing on the distinctions of focusing on the eighteen emptinesses, etc." Thus it is said. Therefore, the standard for initially obtaining the object on which the mind is held is: Clearly visualize the head, two hands, other parts of the body, and two feet in sequence several times, and then, when visualizing the overall body, if about half of the gross limbs can appear in the mind, even if a clear appearance with light does not occur, be content with just that much and hold the mind on it. The reason for this is as follows: If you are content with just that much and do not hold the mind, but want something clearer than that and repeatedly clarify, then the object will become slightly clearer, but not only will you not be able to attain the samadhi of mental stability, but it will also become an obstacle to attaining it. Even if the object is not very clear, if you hold the mind on that half-clear object, you will quickly attain samadhi, and then, by improving the clarity, the clear part will be easily accomplished. This comes from the instructions of Master Yeshe De, and it seems very important. Regarding the way objects appear, there seems to be a classification of four sentences in two groups, but since the way things appear varies from person to person, with some being easy and some being difficult, and even when they appear, some are clear and some are not, and these two situations also have various degrees of stability and instability, there is no certainty. If it is the time to practice the deity yoga of secret mantra, it is necessary to clearly visualize the form of the deity, so until it appears, one must use various methods to generate it. But here, if the form of the deity is very difficult to appear, then holding onto any one of the objects previously shown is sufficient, because the main purpose is to attain the samadhi of tranquility. Here too, if you focus on the deity's body and practice, then even if its form does not appear and you hold the mind, you will not achieve your desired goal, so the form appearing

One should focus the mind on the image. Moreover, according to the degree of appearance, focus on the image as a whole, and if some parts of the image appear very clear, focus on those parts. If those parts become unclear, still focus on the whole. At that time, if one wants to meditate on yellow, but red appears, such as uncertain colors; if one wants to meditate on a sitting posture, but a standing posture appears, such as uncertain shapes; if one wants to meditate on one, but two appear, such as uncertain numbers; if one wants to meditate on large, but very small appears, such as uncertain sizes, then one must never follow those phenomena, and must focus on the fundamental object of focus. Second, regarding how to apply the mind to this, there are three points: establishing the faultless way, eliminating the faulty way, and showing the measure of a session. The first is: the samadhi to be cultivated here has two special characteristics: like this, the mind has the power of very clear luminosity, and has the aspect of abiding in non-conceptuality, which is focused on the object. Some add bliss to this, making it three. Others also add clarity, making it four, but clarity is included in the first characteristic, so it does not need to be mentioned separately. Joy and bliss, which have the aspect of feeling tranquil, although they appear in the result of the samadhi to be cultivated here, they do not correspond to the samadhi included in the preparatory stage of the first dhyana, and they also do not correspond to the samadhi of the fourth dhyana, which is said to be the supreme basis for cultivating the qualities of the three vehicles, because it does not correspond to either physical or mental bliss, so it is not listed here. Although some samadhis included in the formless realm do not have great power of luminosity, as it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Abandoning the formless samadhi." Like this, except for a few bodhisattvas who have attained mastery, the rest of the bodhisattvas rely on the samadhi included in the realm of dhyana to cultivate qualities, so there is no fault in explaining the characteristics of luminosity. The appearance of such power of luminosity is obstructed by dullness; and the non-conceptuality of focusing on one point is obstructed by excitement. Therefore, dullness and excitement are enemies of samadhi.
