The realm of quiescence, the method of samadhi, the gate of samadhi, the support for attention, the body of internal discernment, also called appearance. These, it should be known, are synonyms for the image that corresponds to the object of knowledge. As it is said. The object to be identified in the present context is: Among the many objects that have been discussed, which object should one rely on here to cultivate quiescence? It is not necessarily one, as in the sutras quoted earlier. One must practice with different objects according to the individual's differences. In particular, if one wants to definitely achieve quiescence, and if one is prone to strong attachment, etc., then one must practice with a definite object. If one does not do so, one may attain a samadhi that is in accordance with quiescence, but one will not attain actual quiescence. For even if one practices with an object of purification, it is said that quiescence will not be achieved unless after a very long time. Since it is said that quiescence will not be achieved by abandoning the object of purification, what need is there to mention not abandoning it? In particular, if one has a lot of conceptual thought, one must definitely practice wind meditation. If one is an even-tempered person or a person with few afflictions, then, as mentioned earlier, one should take as the support for the object whatever one likes from among the objects mentioned earlier. Furthermore, following the samadhi in which the Buddha is now manifestly present and the King of Samadhi, in the Middle and Lower Stages of Meditation, it is said that one should cultivate samadhi by focusing on the body of the Tathagata. The teacher Bodhibhadra also said: Here, there are two kinds of quiescence: that which is attained by looking inward and that which is focused on looking outward. Among these, there are two kinds of looking inward: focusing on the body and focusing on what depends on the body. Among these, there are three kinds of focusing on the body: focusing on the body itself as the form of a deity, focusing on the impure, such as skeletons, and focusing on special signs, such as the khatvanga. There are also five kinds of focusing on what depends on the body: focusing on the breath, focusing on subtle signs, focusing on bindus, focusing on the limbs of light rays, and focusing on joy and bliss. There are two kinds of focusing on looking outward: the special and the ordinary. Among these, the special has two
