The method of purifying afflictions is: merely weakening the seeds of afflictions, and completely eliminating the seeds from the root. The object of the first is: the grossness of the lower realms and the peace of the higher realms from the desire realm to the realm of nothingness. The object of the second is: the sixteen aspects of the four truths, such as impermanence. These also When practicing calm abiding, one does not make distinctions, but simply focuses the mind on the appearance of these objects in any way. In the Middle Stages of Meditation, three objects are taught: to gather all twelve parts of the scriptures into tending towards, flowing into, and abiding in suchness, and to settle the mind on this; and to take the aggregates etc. as objects, which is how much the dharmas are gathered; and to settle the mind on the image of the Buddha seen and heard. The method of settling on the aggregates etc. is: first, one should know that all compounded phenomena can be gathered into the five aggregates, and then gradually gather them into the five aggregates, and focus on this as an object. Just as the wisdom of distinguishing arises when one is accustomed to distinguishing, if one is accustomed to gathering, one can also generate samadhi that does not scatter to other objects, but gathers the mind on the object. This is the oral instruction of the Abhidharma. Similarly, one should know that all dharmas can be gathered into realms and sources, and gather them there and focus the mind. Among them, the objects of purification of the aspects of practice are: as explained before, for those who particularly practice attachment etc., attachment etc. are easy to stop, and it is easy to obtain samadhi based on this, so it is a special object. The objects of the wise are: these dharmas can prevent the self of the person who is different from these dharmas, so it is in accordance with the arising of vipassana that realizes no-self, so it is a very good object of calm abiding. The objects of purifying afflictions are: because it is the antidote to all afflictions, it is of great significance. The pervasive object is: it is not separate from the previous objects. Therefore, one must rely on the object of calm abiding with special benefits to achieve samadhi. Therefore, those who practice samadhi by taking pebbles and sticks etc. as objects do not understand the object of samadhi.

It is clear that this is not understanding how to establish it. Some people think that if they set an object of focus and keep their mind on it, it will become grasping at characteristics, so they do not place their mind on such an object of focus, but rather place it on a supportless state, and they think that this is meditating on emptiness, which is a sign of completely not understanding how to meditate on emptiness. Because, if there is no awareness at that time, then there will be no samadhi of meditating on emptiness. If there is awareness, then there must be an object of knowledge, because awareness is established by knowing something. If there is an object of knowledge, then that is the object of focus of that mind, because object, object of focus, and object of knowledge are the same. In that case, that samadhi must also be considered grasping at characteristics, so that method is not reasonable. Furthermore, whether or not one enters the meditation of emptiness is determined by whether or not one is established on the view of understanding reality, not by whether or not one generates any conceptualization towards an object. More details will be explained below. Those who want to abide in a state without an object of focus must first think that they must keep their mind from scattering to any object, and then they can abide in their mind. Therefore, it is necessary to determine that the mind is focused on a mind-only, and that it does not scatter to any appearance. So, wanting no object of focus contradicts one's own experience. Therefore, many great treatises on the practice of samadhi explain many objects of focus, and their necessity is as previously explained, so one should be skilled in the support for abiding the mind. The Stages of Meditation says that there is no fixed object of focus for calm abiding. And The Lamp for the Path says, "On any one object of focus." This means that it is not necessary to cling to a particular object of focus, but it does not mean that one can abide on any object of focus at random. What kind of person should abide on what kind of object of focus is shown as follows: If it is a person with strong desire to strong conceptualization, then as quoted in the Hearing Place of the Naga Asked Sutra: "Nāgabodhi, if a monastic yogi is practicing yoga and is only practicing desire, then he should place his mind closely on the unattractive. If he is practicing hatred, then he should abide on love. If he is practicing ignorance, then he should abide on the dependent arising of this very condition."
