And thus it arises. If one is practicing pride, then one should focus the mind closely on the various distinctions of the elements. So it is said. If one is only practicing conceptual thought, then one should focus the mind closely on mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out. In this way, one focuses the mind closely on the corresponding object. So it is said. Also, from the Hearer's Ground: Among them, if someone is practicing desire, hatred, delusion, pride, and conceptual thought, then for a while, one should first practice the object of purification that is practiced to purify those afflictions. After that, the abiding of the mind will be realized, and the object of those afflictions will also become clear and definite. Therefore, one must strive with that object without fail. So it is said, so one must strive with those objects. If one is practicing equally and is a person with few afflictions, then it is sufficient to hold the mind on whichever of those objects mentioned earlier one likes. It is not necessary to be specific. From the Hearer's Ground: One who practices equally should strive for whatever one likes for the sake of a slight abiding of the mind, but not for the sake of purifying practice. One should understand that one who practices equally and one who has few afflictions are the same. So it is said. Among them, one in whom the five poisons such as desire are strong is one who, in previous lives, has always cultivated and become accustomed to the five poisons such as desire, and has practiced them many times, so that even towards a small object of the five poisons such as desire, the five poisons such as desire arise strongly and for a long time. One who practices equally is one who, in previous lives, has not always cultivated or become accustomed to the poisons such as desire, has not practiced them many times, and has not regarded them as faults or rejected them, so that although strong and long-lasting desire and so on do not arise towards those objects, it is not that the five poisons such as desire do not arise. One with few afflictions is one who, in other lives, has not cultivated things such as desire, and has regarded them as faults and rejected them, so that towards large, numerous, and excessive objects of desire and so on, desire and so on arise slowly, but towards medium and small objects, they do not arise at all. Furthermore, for one in whom the five poisons such as desire are strong, it lasts a long time; for one who practices equally, it does not last very long; for one with few afflictions

Therefore, one will quickly understand the abiding place of the mind. Regarding the object of the wise, if anyone strives, as asked by Namaguru. Namaguru, if a monk yogi, a practitioner of yoga, is completely ignorant of the self-nature of all conditioned phenomena, or completely ignorant of the objects of self, sentient beings, life, the born, the nourished, and the person, then one should direct the mind to those who are skilled in the aggregates. If one is completely ignorant of the cause, then one should focus on those who are skilled in the elements. If one is completely ignorant of the condition, then one should focus on those who are skilled in the sense bases. If one is completely ignorant of impermanence, suffering, and selflessness, then one should focus on those who are skilled in dependent origination, and direct the mind to what is and is not. As it is said. These five objects primarily dispel ignorance. Regarding the object of purifying afflictions, if anyone focuses the mind, it is said in the sutra, if one wants to be separated from desire in the desire realm, then one should focus on the coarseness of desires and the peace of forms. If one wants to be separated from desire from forms, then one should direct the mind to the coarseness of forms and the peace of the formless realms. If one wants to be weary of all compounded things and wants to be liberated, then one should direct the mind to the truth of suffering, the truth of origin, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. As it is said. These objects can be used for both analytical meditation with vipassanā and abiding meditation with śamatha, so they are not just objects of śamatha, although some objects can be used for newly cultivating śamatha, and some objects can be used to make the already accomplished śamatha special, so they are explained in the section on the objects of śamatha. Showing the types of objects is: the basis on which the mind is held, the support of the object of samādhi, the image or form of the previously mentioned objects appearing in the mind, the types of its name are, as stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi, the image is also called an image, and also called the sign of samādhi and the field of activity of samādhi.
