These are the objects of purification. Among them, there are four pervasive objects: images with conceptualization, images without conceptualization, the limits of things, and the complete accomplishment of what is needed. Among these, from the perspective of the function of the object, there are two types of images: the first is the object of vipassanā (insight meditation), and the second is the object of śamatha (calm-abiding meditation). An image is the self-characteristic of the object being focused on, not the actual thing itself, but its appearance in the mind. When examining it, because there is conceptual thought involved in the examination, it is an image with conceptualization. Furthermore, when focusing on it without examination, because there is no conceptual thought involved in the examination, it is called an image without conceptualization. So, what kind of object is this image an image of? It is an image or appearance of the five objects of practice purification, the five objects of the wise, and the two objects of affliction purification. From the perspective of the object of focus, it is the limit of things, that is, the limit of all things as many as there are, which is 'only this, and nothing else besides this,' and the limit of all things as they are, which is 'it exists only in this way, and does not exist in any other way,' there are two types. Among these, 'as many as there are' refers to all conditioned phenomena included in the five aggregates, all dharmas included in the eighteen elements and twelve sources, and all knowable things included in the four truths, and there is nothing else beyond that. 'As they are' refers to the truth and suchness of these objects, which are meanings established by reason. From the perspective of the result, it is the complete accomplishment of what is needed, that is, by focusing on the images of these objects with śamatha and vipassanā, and by constantly relying on, familiarizing with, and repeatedly practicing this, one is separated from one's own negative tendencies and transformed into another state. Practice purification refers to the objects of purification for those who are heavily engaged in attachment and so on, that is, ugliness, loving-kindness, dependent origination, element analysis, and breathing in and out, there are five types. Among these, the object of ugliness is: the thirty-six things such as hair and body hair are internal ugliness, and discoloration and so on are external ugliness, that is, the ugliness of impurity.

Holding the mind when the appearance of suffering arises in the mind. Love is the thought of accomplishing benefit and happiness with an equal mind, focusing on friends, enemies, and neutrals. Holding the mind on those objects through the way of holding love is called focusing on love, which is called love for both the object and the subject. Focusing on dependent origination: Relying solely on the phenomena of dependent origination that arise in the three times, only the result of the phenomena arises. Other than that, there is no agent or experiencer of the result. Holding the mind by focusing on that meaning in that way. Focusing on the differentiation of elements: Separating the parts of the six elements of earth, water, fire, wind, space, and consciousness, and holding the mind by focusing on them. Focusing on breathing in and out: Focusing on the movement of air in and out by counting and observing, so that the mind does not wander elsewhere. The objects of the wise are also five: being skilled in aggregates, elements, sources, dependent origination, and what is and is not. Among them, aggregates are the five aggregates such as the form aggregate, and being skilled in aggregates means knowing that there is no self or what belongs to self apart from the aggregates. Elements are the eighteen elements such as the eye, and being skilled in elements means knowing the causal conditions by which these elements arise from their respective seeds. Sources are the twelve sources such as the eye, and being skilled in sources means knowing that the six internal sources are the dominant condition for the six consciousnesses, the six external sources are the dominant condition for the object, and the immediately preceding mind is the immediately preceding condition. Dependent origination is the twelve links, and being skilled in dependent origination means knowing that these are impermanent, suffering, and without self. What is and is not is that the maturation that arises from virtue is agreeable, and the maturation that arises from non-virtue is disagreeable, etc., and being skilled in what is and is not means knowing it as such. This is a distinction of being skilled in dependent origination, and its characteristic is that it enables one to know the different causes. When these are made the object of calm abiding, it is holding the mind through a single way of holding that determines where those aggregates and so on are certain. Afflict
