Concerning agitation and lethargy, and how to act when free from agitation and lethargy. First, there are two: adopting remedies without recognizing agitation and lethargy, and adopting remedies without striving to abandon them even when recognized. The first has two parts: determining the characteristics of agitation and lethargy, and the means of cultivating mindfulness to realize them during meditation. First: Agitation. As stated in the Compendium of Abhidharma: "What is agitation? It is the non-pacification of the mind belonging to the category of desire that follows after attractive signs, and it has the function of interrupting calm abiding." As it is said. This has three aspects: The object is a pleasing and attractive object. The aspect is that the mind is not pacified and wanders outward, being a part of desire, it engages in the manner of craving for objects. The function is to interrupt the mind from abiding on the object. When the mind is fixed on an internal object, due to agitation attached to forms, sounds, etc., the mind is involuntarily drawn to those objects and becomes distracted. As the Confession Praise says: "As one focuses on calm abiding, and repeatedly directs the mind to it, from that, the net of afflictions is involuntarily drawn by the rope of attachment to objects." As it is said. So, is the distraction that causes the mind to wander away from the object through the door of other afflictions, and similarly, wandering to other virtuous objects, agitation? Agitation is a part of desire, so wandering through the door of other afflictions is not agitation, but rather the mental factor of distraction among the twenty secondary afflictions. Wandering to virtuous objects is transforming into virtuous mind and accompanying mental factors, so not all wandering is agitation. Lethargy, in many translations, is also translated as languor. It is not the same as the languor of fainting. Regarding its characteristic, most meditators in the snowy mountains seem to think that a dullness of mind that does not wander to other objects and lacks clarity is lethargy. This is not reasonable, because dullness is said to be the cause of lethargy, so the two are different. As the Middle Stages of Meditation says: "If one is oppressed by dullness and sleep, and the mind becomes lethargic or suspects it will become lethargic."

Because it is said "I", and also in the commentary, it says: If one is submerged by dullness and sleep, or is afflicted by any of the near afflictions of samadhi, then that is inner mental wandering. Because it is said that the mind is submerged by the power of dullness and sleep, it is inner distraction. Also, in the Compendium of Abhidharma, it is said: Although sinking is described in the context of near-afflictive distraction, the distraction described there can also be virtuous, so it is not necessarily afflictive. Therefore, dullness is: In the Compendium of Abhidharma, it says: What is dullness? It is the mind, which is part of ignorance, that is not suitable for कार्य (Tibetan), and it has the function of being a companion to all afflictions and near afflictions. Therefore, a part of ignorance is the heaviness of body and mind, which is not suitable for कार्य (Tibetan). In the commentary on the Treasury of Knowledge, it says: What is dullness? It is the heaviness of body and the heaviness of mind, that is, whatever is the unsuitability of body for कार्य (Tibetan) and the unsuitability of mind for कार्य (Tibetan). Sinking is: the way the mind holds its object loosens, and it does not hold the object very clearly or firmly. Therefore, even if there is clarity, if the way of holding the object is not very clear, one will fall into sinking. In the Middle Stages of Meditation, it says: When the mind does not clearly see the object, like a blind person, or like a person entering darkness, or like closing the eyes, then one should know that one has fallen into sinking. Because it is said so. I have not seen a clear definition of sinking in other major texts. There are two types of sinking, virtuous and neutral, while dullness is either unwholesome or obscured and neutral, and is only a part of ignorance. Also, from the major texts, it is said that in order to eliminate sinking, one should focus on pleasant objects such as Buddha images, and cultivate appearance, thereby uplifting the mind. Therefore, by preventing the unclear object and the lowering of the mind's holding, as if darkness has fallen on the mind, both the clarity of the object and the strength of the holding are necessary. The clarity of the object alone and the clarity of the subject are not sufficient. Excitement is easy to recognize, but sinking is difficult to understand because it has not been clearly defined in reliable major texts.
