Napa is when the mind is overly attached to a joyful state. Desires associated with this, etc., as previously mentioned, are four in number. Thus, the four practices such as guarding the sense faculties, which were taught earlier during the practice sessions, are crucial for preventing both sinking and excitement. Furthermore, if one understands these causes and strives to prevent them, it will be very beneficial for cutting off sinking and excitement. Therefore, even subtle aspects of sinking and excitement should be recognized with mindfulness, and no matter what they are like, they should not be accepted but must be rejected in every way. If this is not done, it will be a fault of samadhi called "non-manifestation," as stated in the Madhyāntavibhāga. Therefore, one should not abandon the effort to cut off subtle forms of excitement and distraction, thinking that even if they are cut off at the beginning, they cannot be eliminated. Nor should one think that if they are not strong and do not have a very long duration, or if they are weak and of short duration, they will not accumulate karma and therefore do not need to be cut off. To avoid these, those who do not manifest, pretending to know how to accomplish pure samadhi without actually knowing, and those who pursue samadhi, are actually deceiving themselves. This is because they have deviated from the methods of practicing samadhi established by the venerable Maitreya and others. Similarly, in preventing sinking and excitement, most of the time, one is initially interrupted by excitement and distraction, so one must strive to cut them off. After striving in this way, when gross excitement and distraction disappear, one will gain a little stability. At that time, one should strive to guard against sinking. When one exerts effort to guard against sinking, excitement will again interrupt the stability in a more subtle way than before. Therefore, one should strive to cut it off, and when it disappears, the stability will increase. At that time, sinking will also arise, so one should strive to cut off sinking. In short, one should withdraw the mind from external excitement, settle it internally, focus on the object of meditation, and seek stability. Once stability is gained, one should alternately engage in strong guarding against sinking and enhance clarity. By alternately engaging in these two, one will accomplish flawless samadhi. One should not rely solely on a clear state with the power of grasping but without clarity to hope for stability. Second

How should one act when free from sinking and excitement? As previously explained, even subtle sinking and excitement should be cut off and meditated upon. When there is no imbalance that causes sinking or excitement, and the mind enters a state of equanimity, if one still fabricates or exerts effort, it is a fault of samadhi, so one should cultivate equanimity as an antidote to it. As it says in the Middle Stages of Meditation: "When sinking and excitement have ceased, and one sees that the mind is resting naturally on the object, then one should relax effort and cultivate equanimity, and at that time, one should remain as long as one wishes." So, how does making effort or exertion become a fault? This refers to when the mind is excited, one draws it inward, and when it is sinking, one elevates it. By meditating in this way, when one has confidence that sinking and excitement will not arise at the end of each session, one still takes great care to guard against sinking and excitement and protect it, just as in the beginning. If one does so, as it says in the Later Stages of Meditation: "If one makes effort when the mind has already entered a state of equanimity, then the mind will become distracted." Therefore, because it will become distracted, one needs to know how to relax at that time. This means relaxing effort, not abandoning the strength of maintaining mindfulness. Therefore, cultivating equanimity is not done at all times when there is no sinking and excitement, but only after the momentum of sinking and excitement has subsided. Because when the momentum of sinking and excitement has not subsided, there is no equanimity at all. So, what is equanimity? Generally, there are three types of equanimity: equanimity of feeling, equanimity as one of the four immeasurables, and equanimity of formation. Here, it refers to equanimity of formation. Its nature is as stated in the Śrāvakabhūmi: "What is equanimity? With respect to the object of calm abiding and insight, the mind is completely free from affliction, the equanimity of mind, the natural flow, the natural entry, the comfort of mind, the capacity of mind, and whatever is established by the action of not exerting effort." One should understand it in this way. When one has attained such equanimity, when meditating on samadhi, in the absence of sinking and excitement, one should manifest that equanimity and abide without exerting too much effort.
