Relying on that, obtaining one-pointedness of mind is called mental samadhi, which is explained in the Madhyāntavibhāga-bhāṣya and others. Being too subdued is being too lax, and adding "too elevated" means being too tense, meaning that one must cultivate while being free from these two. Second, relying on that, there are three stages of arising of mind-abiding: the actual stage of arising of mind-abiding; the way it is accomplished by the six powers; and the way it has four mental engagements. First, among the nine minds, placing the mind on this or that means completely gathering the mind from all external objects and directing it inward to the object. As stated in the Ornament of the Sūtras: "The mind is directed to the object." Continuously placing means that the mind that was initially placed does not wander elsewhere, but continuously abides on that object. As it says: "Do not let its continuity be scattered." Re-placing means that if one wanders outward due to forgetfulness, one recognizes this and again attaches the mind to that object. As it says: "Quickly realizing the distractions, one should again re-place it there." Closely placing is explained in the First Stage of Meditation as: knowing that the previous mind has wandered and abandoning it, and this mind abandoning distractions and diligently placing it on that object. In the Prajñāpāramitā Upadesha, it is explained as: the mind is naturally vast, but it should be repeatedly gathered and made subtle, and placed higher and higher. It is in accordance with the saying: "The wise should gather the mind inward, higher and higher." In the Śrāvakabhūmi, it says: first, place mindfulness nearby so that the mind does not move outward, that is, generate the power of mindfulness and do not let forgetfulness scatter outward. Taming means contemplating the qualities of samadhi and being happy with samadhi. As it says: "Then, seeing the qualities, tame the mind towards samadhi." In the Śrāvakabhūmi, it says: if the mind is disturbed by any of the five objects such as forms, the three poisons, or the signs of men and women, one should first recognize these as faults and not let these ten signs steal the mind. Pacifying means viewing distraction as a fault and pacifying the mind that is unhappy with samadhi.

That is, in order to see the fault of distraction, to dislike it and pacify it. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi: If the mind is disturbed by the conceptual thoughts of desire, etc., and the near afflictions such as the obscuration of desire, one should first regard it as a fault and not let the mind indulge in those conceptual thoughts and near afflictions. "Completely pacifying" refers to pacifying the arising of attachment, displeasure, drowsiness, and sleep, etc. As it says: Attachment and displeasure, etc., arising, likewise pacify. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi: If forgetfulness arises and the previously mentioned conceptual thoughts and near afflictions arise, do not accept whatever arises, but abandon them. "One-pointed" means to strive for effortless entry. As it says: Thereafter, the one with vows and diligence, with mind manifesting activity, obtains natural arising. Also, as it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi: With manifesting activity, without interruption, continuously abiding in the continuum of samādhi, thus it is making the continuum into one. One should understand it as such. The naming of the eighth mind is also said to be making the continuum into one, and it seems that the name easily conveys its meaning. "Equally abiding" refers to when the mind becomes equal, from the Stages of Meditation it says to practice equanimity. From the Prajñāpāramitā Instruction, it says that having become accustomed to making the continuum into one, one will naturally enter into spontaneous accomplishment and obtain autonomy. It also says: Having become accustomed to this, one does not fabricate. As it says in the Śrāvakabhūmi, "Becoming samādhi." Its meaning is also as it says therein: Through constantly practicing and familiarizing, performing many times, obtaining the path of effortless entry and natural entry, without manifesting activity, and through spontaneous accomplishment itself, his mind enters into the continuum of samādhi without distraction, thus it is becoming samādhi. It is clearly proclaimed as such. These namings of the nine minds, as it says in the First Stages of Meditation: The path of śamatha is explained in the Prajñāpāramitā, etc., etc., it is done according to what is quoted. This is strength.
