This is the section on explaining with reason. The first part has three aspects: Examining from the object, the subject, and the basis, it is unreasonable. In the first part, examining whether there is autonomy is unreasonable: One should contemplate what reason there is to be angry at the perpetrator. If one contemplates in this way, one will think that it is because the perpetrator first generated the thought of wanting to harm oneself, and then through action prevented one's own happiness or caused unpleasant suffering to body and mind. If the perpetrator has the autonomy not to harm oneself, but deliberately harms, is that why one is angry? Or, does the perpetrator have no autonomy at all, but is involuntarily driven by others to cause harm, and that is why one is angry? If it is the former, then it is unreasonable to be angry, because the perpetrator has no autonomy in causing harm. For example, when there are seeds of habitual afflictions, and the causes and conditions of approaching the object and improper attention are gathered, even if one does not think that the mind of harming will arise, these causes and conditions will cause it to arise; and if these causes and conditions are not complete, even if one thinks it will arise, it will never arise. Therefore, these causes and conditions generate the desire to harm, and this desire generates the actions of harming, and this action causes suffering to others, therefore, that person has no autonomy at all. He himself has become a slave to the afflictions, like a servant of the afflictions. If one has no autonomy at all, but is involuntarily driven by others to cause harm, then one should not be angry at all. For example, some people who are possessed by spirits want to harm those who help them to be freed from possession, and even beat them. But people think that this is because the spirits have made them lose their autonomy, so they do so, and therefore they are not angry with them at all, but strive to drive out the spirits as much as possible. Similarly, when a Bodhisattva faces a perpetrator causing harm, they will think: This is because the demon of afflictions has made them lose their autonomy, so they do so. Therefore, one will not generate any anger towards that person, but in order to separate this person from afflictions, I will strive to practice the conduct of a Bodhisattva. This is the thought that should be generated.

Furthermore, as it says in the Four Hundred Stanzas: "Anger is also seized by the elements. A doctor is not angry at a fight. The Able One sees afflictions as enemies, but not the individuals associated with afflictions." And, the teacher Chandrakirti also said: "Here, sentient beings are not the fault, but these afflictions are the fault. Having analyzed in this way, wise people do not become angry at sentient beings." As it is said. Although many reasons are given in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior, this one is easy to generate certainty, and it seems to be a powerful antidote to anger. In the Bodhisattva Grounds, it is also said that by meditating on the mere concept of dharma, one can endure harm, which is the same meaning as this. Therefore, one should repeatedly generate certainty in this and strive to meditate on it. If those sentient beings had autonomy, then no one would suffer, because they do not want suffering, and they also have autonomy. Furthermore, when they are driven by strong afflictions, they even do things to their own bodies, which they cherish and pity, such as jumping off cliffs, jumping into abysses, harming themselves with thorns and weapons, and cutting off food. Thinking of this, what need is there to mention harming others? One should also prevent anger by thinking in this way. As it says in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Behavior: "Thus, everything is under the control of others. Because of their control, they have no autonomy. Having understood this, one will not become angry at all things that are like illusions." And, "Therefore, when you see an enemy or friend acting improperly, you should not be angry. You should think that this is also caused by various conditions, and knowing only that, you should rejoice. If everything could be accomplished as desired, then since no one wants to suffer, all sentient beings should be free from suffering. How could this be when they are oppressed by suffering?" And, "When one is subdued by afflictions, one can even kill oneself. How then can one not harm the bodies of other sentient beings?" As it is said. If we examine whether it is sudden or intrinsic, the unreasonableness lies in this: the fault of harming others is either the intrinsic nature or the non-intrinsic nature of sentient beings. If it is intrinsic, then one should not be angry, just as one should not be angry at the heat and burning of fire. However, if it is sudden, one should not be angry either, just as when smoke and the like appear in the sky, one should not be angry at the sky because of its fault. Think in this way and prevent anger.
