Therefore, it is said in the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: If harming others is the nature of children, it is not appropriate to be angry with them, just as one would not blame fire for its nature of burning. However, if the fault is sudden, and the nature of sentient beings is certain, then it is still not appropriate to be angry, just as one would not blame the sky for billowing smoke. And so on. If one examines whether harm is caused directly or indirectly, it is unreasonable to be angry. If one is angry with the harmer who directly causes harm, then one should be angry with the stick, etc., as if it were a person. If one is angry with the harmer who indirectly causes harm, then just as a person is struck by a stick, etc., the person also strikes the harmer out of anger, so one should be angry with the anger itself. The stick, etc., are merely tools that are used. If one is angry with the thrower, that too is driven by anger. If it is said to be a fault, then one should be angry with the anger. Therefore, if one is not angry with the stick, then one should not be angry with the thrower either. If one is angry with the thrower, then one should also be angry with the anger, but if one does not think so, then the mind has gone down an unreasonable path, so one should hold a correct understanding of things that are the same in all respects, and one should direct the mind towards not being angry with people, just as with a stick. On this point, one cannot distinguish based on whether the stick and the thrower have harmful intent, which can be understood through the reasoning that prevents autonomy, as explained earlier. If one examines the cause that drives the harmer, it is unreasonable to be angry. Because experiencing the suffering caused by the harmer does not arise from a causeless or incompatible cause, but from a compatible cause. And that is the past non-virtuous karma, therefore, due to the power of one's own karma, the harmer is involuntarily driven. Therefore, one should think that one is responsible and should not be angry with others, thereby condemning anger in every way. For example, the guardians of hell are generated by one's own evil karma and cause harm to oneself, just like this: In the past, I have done such harm to sentient beings. Therefore, sentient beings harm me, and it is appropriate that I suffer such harm. And, children do not want suffering, yet they crave the cause of suffering, so if they are harmed by their own fault, then what is there to blame others for? For example, the guardians of hell.

Like a forest of sword leaves, if this is caused by my own karma, whom should I be angry at? Driven by my own karma, those who harm me arise. If they cause sentient beings to fall into hell, haven't I already destroyed them? So it is said. Venerable Sharavapa also said: If I say I won't retaliate, it actually shows that there is no flavor of Dharma. If you examine the situation, it is not appropriate to be angry. If anger arises towards the one who harms you because you cannot bear the suffering, then this is contradictory. Because you cannot bear the small suffering of the present, you diligently create the cause of immeasurable suffering in the lower realms. Therefore, you should think to yourself, 'I am very foolish,' and reproach yourself, striving not to give rise to anger. Even to this small amount of present suffering, if I cannot endure, then why not prevent the cause of suffering in hell, which is anger? So it is said. Among these, the suffering caused by harm is the result of past negative karma. Therefore, experiencing that result exhausts past negative karma. If you can endure, you will not accumulate new sins, and you will increase much merit. Without regard for the decline of their own Dharma, you should regard those who harm you as kind, as if they have entered for the purpose of purifying your own sins. As it is said in the Jataka: 'Whoever does not think of the decline of their own Dharma, but enters as if to purify my sins, if I do not endure this, what could be more ungrateful than this?' And as it is said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds: 'That which is said to exhaust the fruits of past misdeeds, is just this. How can one lead to the cause of suffering through harming others and anger?' So it is said. Therefore, just as one endures cutting and burning as a means of curing a great disease, it is very reasonable to endure small suffering in order to avert great suffering. Regarding the basis for not being angry, examine the cause of harm and whether there is fault or no fault. Their weapon and my body are both causes of suffering. If they use a weapon to cut my body, whom should I be angry at? A boil that resembles a human form, unbearable to touch, full of suffering, is held by me with the arrow of desire.
