Pages 501 to 600 Pages 501 to 600 What should be done if two beggars appear? If two beggars appear from the beginning, if it is possible to fulfill the wishes of both, then the wishes of both should be fulfilled. If it is not possible, then one should first think of fulfilling the wishes of the poor. If it is not possible to fulfill the wishes of both, then one should say with gentle words, 'Good person, I have already dedicated this item to this poor person from the beginning, please do not mind.' In this way, it is possible to fulfill the wishes of those who are not wealthy. These methods of learning about giving are very important for beginners who have taken the Bodhisattva vows, so they are written down. Those without special instructions are explained according to the views of the Bodhisattva-bhumi. Secondly, what should be done if one cannot give? When a beggar begs, if one is oppressed by stinginess, one should think, 'This object and I will inevitably be separated, it will abandon me, and I will abandon it.' Therefore, one should give it away, be happy in one's heart, and take its essence as provisions for the time of death. If one gives it away, one will not be attached to wealth at the time of death, there will be no regret, but one will feel joy and satisfaction.' One should think in this way. Even if one thinks in this way, if one still cannot give, one should say, 'I am still weak and my roots of virtue have not yet matured. For the Great Vehicle, I am still a beginner, controlled by the mind that does not want to give, close to accepting wrong views, and abiding in self-grasping and grasping at what is mine.' Therefore, please forgive me, noble person, and do not be sad. I will do my best to fulfill the wishes of you and all sentient beings.' One should make the beggar understand in three ways, which were spoken from a strong request. This is done to avoid the fault of mutual distrust, but it does not mean that there is no fault of stinginess. Because the Compendium of Trainings says that Bodhisattvas should be blamed for stinginess. However, if one does this, it seems that one can avoid the failure of not giving wealth and Dharma due to stinginess. The Compendium of Perfections also says, 'If a beggar appears before you, but you are too weak to give, in any case, do not let the beggar be discouraged, and soothe his heart with gentle words.' In the future, begging

If (stinginess) arises, be sure not to become discouraged and disheartened. Completely eliminate the faults of stinginess, and strive diligently to completely abandon craving. Thus it is. Regarding relying on the antidotes to the obstacles of generosity, there are four obstacles, like those that arise from accumulation: unfamiliarity, decline, attachment, and not seeing the result. The first of these is: Although there are things to give, one does not want to give to the beggar. The antidote to this is: Quickly recognize that this fault is due to the fact that I have not been accustomed to giving in the past. If I do not give now, I will not like giving in future lives either. Examine this separately and then give, do not let the fault of unfamiliarity control you. The second is: Because one's resources are very meager, the mind of giving does not arise. The antidote to this is: Think, 'When I wandered in samsara, I did not benefit others. Due to past karma or being under the control of others, I experienced many unbearable sufferings such as hunger and thirst. If (resources) arise from benefiting others, even if this suffering causes me to die, it is only generosity that is good for me. Turning away the beggar is not like that. Even without resources, I can survive on vegetables or whatever.' Thinking this, accept the suffering of poverty and give. The third is: One becomes attached to the object of generosity, which is very pleasing and extremely excellent, and therefore the mind of giving to the beggar does not arise. The antidote to this is: Quickly recognize the fault of attachment, and know that clinging to the inverted perception that considers suffering to be happiness will cause suffering in the future. Abandon it and give that object away. The fourth is: One does not see the benefit of perfect enlightenment arising from giving, but the mind of giving arises from seeing the benefit of great resources. The antidote to this is: Quickly recognize this fault, and observe that in general all conditioned phenomena are destroyed moment by moment, and in particular resources will be destroyed and separated. Therefore, dedicate all giving to great enlightenment.
