This is what is done. Observing only the ripening of enjoyment and so on, is like a merchant who, for the sake of profit, gives away all his possessions without any reluctance, only gains profit but cannot gain merit. Similarly, although one obtains great enjoyment, one cannot obtain liberation. The Catuhsataka says: "Here, the giving of alms is said to produce great fruit in the future. Taking and giving away completely is criticized like a trade profit." Secondly, the giving of thought alone is to go to a secluded place, gather within the mind, with pure thought, from the bottom of one's heart, with joy, to emanate through imagination vast and immeasurable varieties of things to be given, and to believe that they are given to sentient beings. By this, with little effort, immeasurable merit increases, and this is also said in the Bodhisattvabhumi to be the giving of a wise Bodhisattva. Although it is said in the Questions of Sagarmati that this is to be done by those who have no wealth, it is not that those who have wealth cannot do it. The giving of wisdom, how to give when there is no enjoyment, is possible until the first bhumi of pure intention is attained. Once that bhumi is attained, it is impossible to be without enjoyment. The Bodhisattvabhumi says: "Thus, a Bodhisattva does not have those enjoyments until he has attained pure intention. Like one who has nothing, he gives the giving of wisdom. A Bodhisattva's pure intention, in what way does he attain perfect liberation from the lower realms, in that way he will obtain inexhaustible enjoyment in all lifetimes." Thus it is said. Fourthly, to summarize the meaning of these, after taking the Bodhisattva vows, to train in the ways of learning the giving of high bhumis as an object of aspiration, and to learn by knowing what should and should not be done by those who are now engaging in the giving of alms as described above, and especially to rely on the antidote to miserliness towards body, enjoyment and roots of virtue, and to strive to increase the mind of giving, and to cultivate joy in practicing in this way, and if the mind is not trained in this way, one should generate regret, and if one acts in this way, then as it is said in the Questions of Sagarmati, in other lifetimes, very little effort.
