Even the smallest faults should be diligently abandoned. As previously stated, one should contemplate the faults that are contrary to discipline, namely the grave consequences of the ten non-virtuous actions. As for the benefits, they have been discussed before. As the glorious hero said: From the Vinaya Sutra: Divine objects, delightful human enjoyments, Supreme bliss, exquisite tastes, divine abundance, What is so amazing that arises from discipline? Behold, all the Buddha's teachings arise from it. Furthermore, relying on this, the continuum becomes more and more excellent, the training becomes the same as that of the great Bodhisattvas who possess compassion, and pure wisdom is attained, having abandoned all the seeds of misconduct. Other ornaments, if worn by someone too young or too old, become objects of ridicule and are not beautiful. But the ornament of discipline, whoever possesses it, whether young, old, or middle-aged, brings joy to all and is the best of ornaments. Other fragrant scents can only travel with the wind, not against the wind, and are limited. But the fragrance of the fame of discipline travels in all directions. Sandalwood and other balms that relieve heat are contrary to renunciates. But balms that protect against the heat of afflictions are not contrary to renunciates and are compatible. Even if one only has the appearance of a renunciate, one who possesses the wealth of discipline becomes superior to others. From the Vinaya Sutra: Discipline is the path to attain distinction, To practice together with those who possess compassion, Pure wisdom is the nature of excellence, It is said to be the best ornament, free from faults. Pleasing fragrance in all three realms, It is a balm that is not contrary to renunciates. Though the appearance is similar, if one possesses discipline, Then that one becomes noble among humans. Furthermore, even without uttering flattering words and without striving with effort, the necessities of life naturally gather. Even without threatening with violent actions, all beings are subdued. Not to mention one's own relatives and so forth. Even beings who have not been kind before and are not known naturally develop love. Even the dust from the footprints is touched by the heads of gods and humans and obtained.

The benefits of bringing everything to the realm of offering also come from discipline. As it says in the scriptures: Even without uttering a word, without exerting any effort, one can obtain the enjoyment and service needed for practice. Without intimidation, one can subdue all the world, and without labor, without cultivation, one can attain freedom. Things that should not be mentioned can naturally appear, and no benefit or quiet place is left undone. All people who were previously unknown will respect the person who has discipline. Even the dust that brings auspiciousness with footprints is placed on the crown of the head, and gods and humans prostrate and touch their heads to the ground, and everything is brought along. Therefore, the one with discipline is the highest lineage. So it is. A wise person who thinks well of the benefits and faults, as it says in the scriptures: The discipline that the Bodhisattva should protect, do not break it out of greed for your own happiness. And, because of being independent, one is happy, and one protects the discipline that is adorned with the praise of the wise. By completely fulfilling all the places of learning, one relies on the complete and unpretentious discipline. As it is said, one should protect it. And, just because one is afraid of falling into the lower realms, or just because one desires the perfection of gods and humans, one should eliminate these thoughts, and in order to settle all sentient beings in discipline, one should protect it. As it says in the scriptures: If there are countless sentient beings who are all happy to abide in pure discipline, and who practice discipline for the benefit of the world, this is said to be the perfection of discipline. Therefore, eliminate the fear of the lower realms and the desire for kingship and the perfection of high places, protect the immaculate discipline, and diligently practice discipline for the benefit of the world. So it is. Third, there are three categories of discipline: the discipline of vows, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. The first of these is, in the Yogacarabhumi, seven kinds of individual liberation are taught, so if a Bodhisattva who holds the individual liberation vows abides in the Bodhisattva vows, then whether it is the individual liberation vows of a householder or a renunciate, and the vows of abandonment that are common to these, are the discipline of vows. A Bodhisattva who is not suitable as a basis for individual liberation vows
