Walking lightly and quickly without stopping makes for rapid progress. Hopping and pausing due to heaviness is like not moving at all. That's what is said. Thirdly, relying on those two to diligently engage in effort is to earnestly initiate diligence. Having identified the three obstacles to diligence, apply the remedies to restore what has declined, generate what has not yet arisen, and increase what has already arisen. Cultivate the conducive conditions: aspiration, the cause for not turning back once engaged—steadfastness, and the power of joy—not wanting to interrupt when engaging in that activity. If you are skilled in the methods of initiating diligence using the power of acceptance and rejection, you must generate the power to earnestly engage in diligence, so that will be explained. Among these, how should you act when initiating the diligence of abandoning what should be abandoned? As it is said: "Like a veteran warrior with the enemy, On the battlefield wielding swords, One should avoid the weapons of afflictions, And subdue the afflictive enemies." For example, a veteran warrior, an expert accustomed to that task, when fighting with enemies and swords, etc., does not merely calculate on destroying the opponent, but is also skilled at avoiding being harmed by the opponent's weapons. Just as they accomplish both tasks of destroying the opponent and protecting themselves, so too, when a practitioner fights with afflictions, they must be cautious and avoid the afflictions harming their mind in return, and be skilled at destroying the opponent by relying on the remedies. If it is not like that, even if one aspect of an affliction's action is blocked by a remedy, other afflictions will steal some of the virtuous aspects, or create a greater fault in the mind, resulting in the two being equal, and it will be difficult to increase virtuous actions. For example, if one thinks that knowledge is important for practicing Dharma, and only takes knowledge as the core to pursue, although the ignorance of not knowing is eliminated by hearing, because one has not guarded against other afflictions, one becomes stained with many misdeeds during that time, causing one's mind-stream to become very corrupted. Or, thinking that taming the mind-stream is more important than knowledge, one mainly engages in meditation, abandoning guarding against the enemy of ignorance, not listening to or studying the Dharma, being very ignorant of the rules of what to adopt and abandon in the vows one has taken, and constantly failing by transgressing them, like that.

Similarly, when fighting against afflictions, just as when a sword falls from the hand during battle, one does not delay out of fear of being killed, but immediately picks it up. If one forgets the aspects of what to adopt and abandon, and loses the weapon of mindfulness, one must immediately rely on mindfulness out of fear of falling into the lower realms. As it is said: "If a sword falls on the battlefield, one quickly picks it up out of fear. Likewise, if the weapon of mindfulness is lost, quickly take up the fear of hell." So it is said. Mindfulness is extremely important, and this is also what the Protector Nagarjuna said: "The Victorious One has shown that mindfulness, which belongs to the powerful body, is the only path to go by. Therefore, one should strive to guard it, for when mindfulness is lost, all dharmas will perish." So it is said. The object on which to rely on mindfulness must also be well distinguished by wisdom, so that mindfulness can grasp it. Mindfulness itself does not have the ability to independently distinguish objects. How should it be distinguished by wisdom? In general, it is all the places of adopting and abandoning that are spoken of in the scriptures, and in particular, the things to adopt and abandon of the vows that each individual has taken. If one relies on mindfulness and awareness with regard to these, then the practice will be perfected. Merely focusing the mind on a single object and relying on mindfulness and awareness will not get one anywhere. Just as in battle, one strives to prevent the sword from falling from the beginning, and even if it falls, one picks it up immediately, because there is a fear of being killed that is not just lip service. Similarly, the practitioner should also strive from the beginning not to forget the mindfulness of what to adopt and abandon, and if it is forgotten, one should rely on it immediately, because at the time when mindfulness is lost, the result of being stained by misdeeds is falling into the lower realms, which is not just lip service, but a genuine fear that arises in the mind. This also depends on cultivating it with karma and its results as the foundation. For those of us who do not think that these are profound instructions, the root of the path, the virtues of practice that please the wise, is cut off. So, if one thinks that even small misdeeds should be feared and not allowed to continue, but should be stopped immediately, why is that? For example, if a poisoned arrow creates a small wound on the body, it will soon spread throughout the body.
