Suffering in immeasurable places, why doesn't my heart ache? The qualities of myself and others, many need to be accomplished by me. For each of these qualities, one needs to become accustomed to them over countless eons. I have never developed any familiarity with even a fraction of these qualities. It's amazing that I have wasted this precious human life. So it is said. The power of stability is to not turn back from whatever one has started to diligently pursue, but to bring it to completion. That is, one should not casually begin anything at first, but examine it carefully. If one has the ability, then engage in it; if not, then do not. It is better not to start at all than to abandon it midway. The reason for this is that if one becomes accustomed to abandoning vows, in future lives, one will also abandon the precepts one has taken, etc., due to the same habit, which will increase sins in this life. In future lives, the suffering results will also increase. Because one is thinking of doing the previous thing, other virtuous deeds will not be accomplished. Because one has turned back from the previous thing, its results will diminish, and the previous thing itself will not be completed, so it will not be perfected. In short, whatever one has vowed to do, not only will it not be completed, but it will also become an obstacle to accomplishing other things. Moreover, due to the same habit, the vows of the precepts one has taken will also not be stable. It is said like this: First, examine the preparations, then either begin or do not begin. Not beginning is best, but having begun, do not turn back. In future lives, one will become accustomed to this, and sins and suffering will increase. The timing of others and the results will also diminish, and that thing will not be accomplished. So it is said. Therefore, if one wants the vow to be completed, one should cultivate the three prides: the pride of action, the pride of afflictions, and the pride of ability. So it is said. Among them, the pride of action is to not rely on anyone to help one accomplish one's path, but to accomplish it alone, that is, "I will do it alone," this is the pride of action. And in the Letter to a Friend, it is also said: "Liberation depends on me, and others cannot provide any help for this." It is like this. This refers to not relying on others, but thinking that one can accomplish it alone, which is similar to pride, so it is called that. The pride of ability is: beings are under the control of afflictions.

Since it has become like this, if one cannot even accomplish one's own benefit, what need is there to mention the benefit of others? I thought that I could accomplish the benefit of myself and others, so I set out to accomplish it. Because this world, controlled by afflictions, cannot accomplish its own benefit. Beings cannot do as I do, therefore I will do this. So it is said. Furthermore, if even these small actions are not stopped, then why would I not do the action of accomplishing great fruits? Thinking this, I set out to accomplish it. If others are doing inferior things, then how should I myself be? So it is said. However, in accomplishing these two things, it is not through belittling others and being self-righteous that I accomplish them. Rather, I should look upon them with a loving attitude and not mix it with arrogance. Because arrogance will not do this, it is best that I have no arrogance. So it is said. Thinking that I can do what others cannot do is also in accordance with the nature of arrogance, so it is called arrogance. The arrogance of afflictions is: in all circumstances, belittling afflictions, I will conquer these afflictions, these afflictions shall never conquer me. Towards destroying the aspects of disharmony, generating the courage of wisdom and making it firm. I will conquer all, no one shall conquer me. Because the victor is the pure son of the lion, therefore I shall abide in this arrogance. So it is said. If one does not do so and dies, then even small opposing aspects can cause harm. If one encounters a dead snake, even a crow will act like a garuda. If one becomes weak, then even small downfalls will cause harm. For a timid person who has abandoned effort, is there any possibility of liberation from poverty? So it is said. Venerable Sharawa said: The happiness of abandoning the Dharma is not even better than the previous happiness. And one should think that if one abandons the Dharma here, then in future lives and beyond, one will have to endure endless suffering. If one does not make effort oneself, afflictions will not have compassion for you either. The antidote will also say that you cannot practice me, so I will perfect myself, and then it will not come. Even the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas cannot protect you. If one generates arrogance like the former, then even powerful opposing aspects cannot hinder one. Therefore, one must generate that arrogance. Because of generating the effort of arrogance, even great power can be overcome.
