Having arisen from actions, it is certain to please the Buddha. Such a one who abides steadfastly, whether sleeping or not, from the moment of truly undertaking, even if negligent, all sentient beings, because they are limitless like sentient beings, limitless merit will always be accumulated. Because of this limitlessness, it is said that attaining Buddhahood is not difficult. If one abides for immeasurable time, for the sake of immeasurable beings, desiring immeasurable enlightenment, and performing immeasurable good, although that enlightenment is also immeasurable, with the four immeasurables, the accumulation of merit will not take long. How could one not attain Buddhahood? Thus it is said. Therefore, if one's mind is moved with great intensity by love, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment, thinking that one could attain Buddhahood in a short time for the sake of sentient beings, it would be very wonderful. However, when these conditions are absent, seeing that one must study for a very long time and engage in limitless practices, and that many austerities are required, one might think, "If that is the case, who could do it?" If one seeks a shortcut in this way, it will indirectly harm the aspirational mind and directly harm the engaging mind. The power of the Mahayana lineage will gradually diminish, and the path to enlightenment will become very distant. This is because it completely contradicts the way of greatly increasing the power of the mind of enlightenment, as established by Nagarjuna and Asanga according to the Buddha's intention. Therefore, sitting down discouraged will not help anything and will only lead to further discouragement. Therefore, one should thoroughly understand the methods of cultivating enlightenment and then uplift one's spirit, so that accomplishing things will be like having them in one's hand. As it says in the Jataka: "Discouragement does not help to escape poverty. Therefore, without sorrow or suffering, relying on those skilled in accomplishing what is needed, even the most difficult things can be easily liberated. Therefore, do not be afraid or displeased, but accomplish what is needed by whatever means. If one uplifts one's spirit with the steadfast glory of the wise, all things will be accomplished as if in one's hand." Thus it is said. The noble Asanga repeatedly said that even if one is well-versed in the methods of vast learning, one must possess both qualities of not being discouraged and not being content with সামান্য qualities. But now, there is only a little bit of something that appears to be a quality...

Or, even if one possesses the characteristics of merit, but only develops one aspect, they think they have traversed a great portion of the path, and are content with just that. If someone skilled in the key points of the path points out from the gaps in scripture and reasoning that it is indeed just one part of merit, but that one cannot go anywhere with just that, they seem to become very discouraged if they receive such a message. Therefore, one should not be content with a one-sided view of merit, but should seek higher qualities, and although one must learn countless teachings, it seems very rare to find someone without discouragement. Secondly, accumulating the assembly of supporting conditions has four aspects: aspiration, steadfastness, generating the power of joy, and the power of renunciation. The first is: because it is said that desire is the basis of diligence, here aspiration is desire. The reason why it must be generated is: I, in the past and present, have suffered such poverty because of being without aspiration for the Dharma. Who would abandon aspiration for the Dharma? The Buddha said that aspiration is the root of all aspects of virtue. Like that. How to generate aspiration? Its root is always, through contemplating the ripening fruit. This explains contemplating the way in which agreeable and disagreeable fruits arise from black and white actions. Because it is said that faith is the basis of desire, in order to generate the two desires of abandoning and accepting with the faith of conviction. That is, contemplating the benefits of actions and results in general, and especially the conduct of Bodhisattvas, and the causes and effects of the faults of transgressing them, should be understood according to the circumstances. Thus, having developed aspiration for the Great Vehicle, entering its gate is to vow to eliminate all faults of oneself and others, and to accomplish all qualities. To purify each fault together with its imprints, and to fully develop each quality, requires familiarization over countless eons. I do not even have a fraction of the diligence to eliminate and accomplish them, I have wasted my leisure in vain, thinking thus, I must urge myself. The faults of myself and others, immeasurable, I must destroy, because for each fault, one must spend countless eons, I have not even seen a part of beginning to eliminate faults.
