Thus, having prevented procrastination and clinging to evil deeds, even if interest in the sacred Dharma arises, that alone is not enough; one must study the Mahayana. If, therefore, one feels discouraged, thinking that someone like oneself cannot accomplish it, that discouragement should be dispelled. There are three points here: preventing laziness towards what is to be attained, preventing laziness towards the means of attaining it, and preventing discouragement towards the place from which to practice. The first point is: the Buddha, who is to be attained, is the one who has exhausted all faults and perfected all virtues. But for me, even cultivating a single virtue and preventing a single fault seems very difficult. How could someone like me possibly attain such a result? If such discouragement actually arises, it will be a great fault because of abandoning bodhicitta. Even if it doesn't arise, it is necessary to prevent that possibility from the beginning. The way to prevent it is: the Bhagavan (Blessed One) is a reliable person who speaks truthfully and correctly, and does not speak falsely or wrongly. He has said that even bees and the like can attain enlightenment. Since I am born as a human being, I have a good basis, and I have the power of intelligence to discern what to accept and reject. If I do not abandon diligence, why can't I attain it? One should praise oneself in this way: How can I say that I cannot attain enlightenment? One should not be lazy, because the Tathagata speaks the truth, so he spoke this truth: bees, horseflies, bumblebees, and all beings who have become like insects, they too, by generating the power of diligence, can attain the unsurpassed enlightenment that is difficult to attain. Since I am born as a human being of such a kind, able to recognize benefit and harm, if I do not abandon the practice of enlightenment, why can't I attain enlightenment? That is what is said. Furthermore, the Buddhas of the past who have already attained enlightenment, the Buddhas of the present who are currently attaining enlightenment, and the Buddhas of the future who will attain enlightenment, they were not accomplished by a single Buddha who had already attained enlightenment practicing the path. Rather, they were accomplished by people just like us, rising higher and higher. One should think in this way, thereby preventing discouragement. In the Cloud of Jewels Sutra, it says: A Bodhisattva should think in this way: the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, those who have manifestly and completely attained enlightenment, those who are currently manifestly and completely attaining enlightenment, and those who will manifestly and completely attain enlightenment, they too have manifestly attained it through such a method, such a path, and such diligence.

Perfectly become a Buddha. Manifestly and perfectly awaken. Will manifestly and perfectly awaken. Starting from "will." Those Tathagatas also only became Tathagatas, but did not manifestly and perfectly awaken. I, in any case, must manifestly and perfectly awaken to the unexcelled, perfectly complete enlightenment, with the diligence common to all sentient beings and the diligence aimed at all sentient beings, I also seek and strive in this way. Furthermore, in the "Praise of Limitless Qualities," it is said: Those who have attained the state of the Sugatas have also fallen into states much lower than this. Therefore, when you fall into distress, do not denigrate yourself. It is not right to revile me; it makes flourishing people decline. And so on. The reason for generating despondency is that since the Buddha's qualities are limitless and the fruit follows the cause, one must cultivate from the limitless doors of qualities and eliminate from the limitless doors of faults during the path. Only after understanding this well and then looking at oneself will despondency arise. If, during the practice of the Buddha's limitless qualities, one clings to a small aspect of quality and thinks that one can achieve it in this way, thus reversing the understanding of the path, then, as it is now, despondency will never arise. However, this is not a good sign, but rather because one has not found certainty in the way of practice, or although there is a scattered understanding, it is obscured by something that seems easy because one has not taken it into practice oneself. When one truly engages in practice, even if one only shows the rough framework of the beginning and end of the path, one seems to give up easily, thinking, "If that much is needed, who can do it?" Venerable Sharawa also said: The conduct of a Bodhisattva who has not engaged in practice all becomes as easy as shooting an arrow, and despondency does not arise. Now, because there is no complete Dharma, one does not go to the point of despondency and self-deprecation. If it were complete, there would be a great danger of despondency and self-deprecation, which is very inferior. The method for obtaining it is to dispel despondency: If one thinks that becoming a Buddha requires giving away hands and feet, etc., and that one cannot do it, then just
