Suffering must be endured. Even if one does not engage in practice and simply remains at ease in samsara, one will experience unspeakable suffering such as being cut, torn, pierced, and burned. Moreover, one's own benefit is not accomplished there. The suffering of practicing austerities for the sake of enlightenment does not even amount to a fraction of the previous suffering, and the necessity of accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others is also great. However, if one fears giving up limbs and so forth, without weighing the heavy and the light, one is simply afraid out of ignorance. In countless billions of eons, having been cut numerous times, pierced, burned, and struck, one will not attain enlightenment. This suffering of accomplishing my enlightenment is limited, like the suffering of inflicting wounds on the body in order to eliminate pain, internal diseases, and harm. All doctors also heal, and discomfort makes one free from illness. Therefore, in order to destroy many sufferings, one should endure small discomforts. Thus it is said. Giving away the body is not done when one is afraid from the beginning. By gradually training in generosity, attachment to one's own body is reversed, and when the power of great compassion increases, if it becomes of great meaning, then there is no difficulty in giving. Even such ordinary medical treatment is not done by the best doctors, but with very gentle rituals, they heal countless great illnesses. The guide also initially applies generosity to vegetables and so forth. Having become accustomed to that, later one gradually gives away one's own flesh as well. When one has the thought that one's own body is like vegetables and so forth, at that time, what difficulty is there in giving away flesh and so forth? Thus it is said. Therefore, some people feel distressed because those of the Paramita Vehicle must give away their body and life, and say that it is a difficult path to take. But this treatise seems to have well prevented this idea. One does not give when the idea of it being difficult arises, but rather one gives when it is very easy, like giving vegetables and so forth. To prevent shrinking back from the place where one practices the path: Achieving Buddhahood requires taking endless rebirths in samsara, and if one thinks that one will be harmed by the suffering of samsara, so it is not possible to do that, then a Bodhisattva should abandon sins.

Because of the reversed cause, the fruit of feeling suffering will not arise. If the understanding of samsara as being without inherent existence, like an illusion, is firm, there will be no suffering in the mind, and if body and mind flourish with happiness, then even staying in samsara is not a cause for dejection. Therefore, think like this: Because of abandoning sin, there is no suffering. Because of wisdom, there is no displeasure. Like this, wrong thinking and sin harm the mind and body. Merit makes the body happy, and wisdom makes the mind happy. Even if one stays in samsara for the sake of others, why should compassionate ones be dejected? Like that. Therefore, riding the horse of bodhicitta, which dispels all sorrow and fatigue, on the path of going from happiness to happiness, who with a mind would become lazy? Like that. Similarly, one should not be discouraged by the passage of immeasurable time, because the length of time itself is not a cause for dejection. Like this, if suffering is very intense, even a short time is dejecting, but if there is no suffering and there is happiness, even a long time is not dejecting. As it says in the Precious Garland: For those who are suffering, even a short time is difficult to endure, what need is there to mention a long time? For those who have no suffering and have happiness, what harm is there in endless time? There, there is no suffering of the body, where is there suffering of the mind? That is compassion for the suffering world, and by that very thing one dwells for a long time. Therefore, those with intelligence do not become discouraged, saying that buddhahood takes a long time. For the sake of exhausting faults and achieving qualities, one should always strive for this. Like that. Also, to attain enlightenment, one must complete infinite accumulations, and one should not be discouraged, thinking that it is very difficult and one cannot do it. Because what is to be done is for the sake of infinite sentient beings, wanting to attain the infinite qualities of buddhahood, one should be motivated from all sides, aiming to abide for immeasurable time, and take vows to accomplish infinite accumulations. Then, whether one is asleep or not, whether the mind is distracted or not, at all times one is accumulating merit equal to the sky, and as long as the vows exist, one is constantly accumulating, so it is not difficult to complete infinite accumulations. As it says in that very text: Like the sky in all directions, and the earth, water, fire, and wind, are infinite, similarly, one wishes that suffering sentient beings are infinite. Those infinite sentient beings, bodhisattvas with loving hearts,
