Thus it is. The faults are: As said by Lodrö Gyatso (བློ་གྲོས་རྒྱ་མཚོ།): "For the lazy, enlightenment is very far, extremely far. For the lazy, there is nothing from generosity to wisdom. For the lazy, benefiting others is impossible." And also, in the Mindfulness Sutra, it says: "The root of all afflictions, laziness is one; whoever has laziness, they have no dharma at all." As it is said, if there is no diligence, one will be controlled by laziness, and all virtuous dharmas will be impoverished. Therefore, all the purposes of temporary and ultimate individuals will be lost. The divisions of diligence are two: the divisions themselves and the means of generating diligence. The first is three: armor-like diligence, diligence in accumulating virtuous dharmas, and diligence in benefiting sentient beings. The first is: When bodhisattvas begin to exert diligence, before the action, they should wear such armor of intention that precedes the joy of the mind, namely: Even if I have to abide in the hells of sentient beings alone and attain Buddhahood after accumulating days and nights equal to a thousand great kalpas, for countless three thousand great thousand worlds multiplied by hundreds of thousands of billions of kalpas, in order to eliminate the suffering of one sentient being, I should be delighted, exert diligence for perfect enlightenment, and not give up engaging in diligence. What need is there to mention if the time is shorter than that and the suffering is much smaller? Such is armor-like diligence. Any bodhisattva who merely generates admiration and faith in such diligence is also steadfast, because initiating diligence for unsurpassed enlightenment becomes a measureless cause. What need is there to mention one who possesses such diligence? For him, for the sake of enlightenment and others, no matter what work, there is no difficult task that requires enduring discouraging hardships, as stated in the Bodhisattva-bhumi. If one becomes accustomed to such a thought, it will surely become a cause for awakening the power of the Mahayana lineage, so it should be practiced. In the Compendium of Perfections, it is also said: "The beginning and end of samsara are equal, vast and long days and nights transform, accumulating such becomes long years, kalpas.

Like countless drops of water in the ocean, one can generate a moment of supreme Bodhicitta. In such a manner, for each and every other accumulation, even if one must practice, one should not be weary due to compassion. Without laziness, accomplish the excellent Bodhi, abandoning one's own suffering in Samsara, generating the immeasurable and steadfast armor. For the courageous practitioner endowed with compassion, it is said to be the first genuine undertaking. As it is said, this is the armor of diligence. Furthermore, from beginningless Samsara until now, considering one day as a unit, thirty days as a month, and twelve months as a year, after hundreds of thousands of years have passed, one moment of Bodhicitta arises. Seeing one Buddha, one who is as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, can know the mind and behavior of one sentient being. In such a way, even if one must know the minds and behaviors of all sentient beings, one should not be discouraged. With inexhaustible armor and inexhaustible wisdom, one asks. As it is said, this is the unsurpassed armor of diligence. In short, if one can generate such a thought, then one can easily perfect limitless accumulations, immeasurable obscurations can be purified, and it becomes the supreme cause of non-retrogression. The longer the time, the more joyful one is, and the faster one attains Buddhahood. Having no interest in limitless conduct and extremely long periods of time, and desiring to attain Buddhahood in a short time, will become extremely distant for the Buddhas, because it will hinder the arising of the extraordinary courage of the Bodhisattvas. Having donned such armor, for whose sake does one strive diligently? There are two: the diligence of accumulating virtuous Dharma, which is to apply oneself to the six perfections in order to accomplish them perfectly. The diligence of benefiting sentient beings is the diligence of applying oneself to the eleven activities of benefit, as appropriate. Second, the means of generating diligence: as previously stated, all the white Dharma of the two accumulations depends on arising, abiding, and increasing, therefore the practice of generating these two accumulations is extremely important. Among them, since the treatise of the great accomplished scholar Shantideva is seen as easy to understand, easy to practice, and completely perfect, therefore its system will be explained. This has four:

Eliminating obstacles and adverse conditions to diligence, accumulating a multitude of favorable supporting forces, and relying on these two to diligently undertake the endeavor of diligence, as well as the method of making body and mind capable thereby. The first has two aspects: identifying the unfavorable factors and relying on methods to eliminate them. The first is that there are two ways of not entering the path: seeing that one is capable but not entering, and not entering out of timidity, thinking, "How could I possibly accomplish such a thing?" There are also those who do not cultivate because they do not direct their minds to whether they are capable or not, but here, since we are speaking to those who seek liberation, it is not the occasion. The first has two aspects: the lazy person who postpones, thinking there is still time, and the person who, even if not that, is overwhelmed by attachment to inferior, mundane activities. As it is said in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Its unfavorable factors should be explained: attachment to evil laziness, and being of a timid, self-despising nature." So it is said. The causes of laziness are: attachment to the taste of ease and inferior pleasures, craving for the pleasure of sleep, and lack of weariness with samsara. "By tasting the flavor of ease and comfort, and by craving that relies on sleep, from not being weary of the suffering of samsara, laziness will gradually arise." So it is said. Some say that the first two lines show how the appearance arises. There are three ways to rely on methods to eliminate it. There are three ways to prevent the laziness of procrastination: contemplating that this body is quickly destroyed, that after death one falls into the lower realms, and that it is difficult to find this good support again. By meditating on these three, one prevents the laziness of clinging to having leisure and generates the absence of leisure in one's mindstream. These three have already been explained in the context of the person of small capacity. To prevent attachment to evil deeds is to see that the sacred Dharma is the cause of infinite joy arising in this life and the next, and that distractions such as meaningless chatter and frivolity cause this great purpose to be lost, and to see that the next life is a place where non-virtue creates many sufferings, and to meditate and prevent it. "The cause of joy is infinite, having abandoned the supreme joy of the sacred Dharma, why are you happy with distractions and frivolity, which are the cause of suffering?" So it is said. To prevent timidity or self-despisement is:
