If killed, even small suffering will become a cause for deviating from the path. For example, some cowards faint and fall upon seeing the blood of others. Some, upon seeing their own blood, will have even greater courage and steadfastness; some, upon seeing the blood of others, will faint and collapse. This is due to the stability of the mind and cowardly behavior. As it is said. Explaining in detail from the basis, if suffering must be accepted, then what kind of suffering should be accepted? There are eight types for this. Depending on the place: Dharma robes, alms, bedding, cushions, medicine and utensils for sickness are the places for increasing pure conduct. One should not be displeased or discouraged with these things, even if they are bad, few, not respected by others, or given after a long time, but should accept the suffering that arises from them. Depending on worldly dharmas: not obtaining, unpleasantness, slander, suffering, destruction, exhaustion, old age, sickness, death—these nine attributes from destruction to death are worldly dharmas. One should separately examine and accept the suffering that depends on all of these or each one. Depending on conduct: walking, standing, sitting, and lying down are the four conducts. By the first two and the third, when purifying the mind day and night from obscurations, one should accept the suffering that arises from it, and not rest inappropriately on a bed, small bed, grass mat, or leaf mat. Depending on completely upholding the Dharma: offering and serving the Three Jewels, offering and serving the lama, upholding the Dharma, widely showing the Dharma that has been upheld to others, reciting praises, dwelling alone in solitude and properly contemplating, cultivating shamatha and vipashyana through yoga contemplation—these are the seven ways of upholding the Dharma. When striving to do these things, if suffering arises, it should be accepted. Depending on living by begging: practicing an unattractive appearance by shaving hair and beard, etc., practicing torn clothes and ugly colors, and all worldly behaviors.

Because of abiding in restraint, not doing other things; abandoning fields and so on, relying on offerings obtained from others for sustenance, becoming a dependent livelihood; accumulating the obtained offerings without using them, until the end of life, seeking Dharma robes and so on from others; abandoning non-celibacy, until death, turning away from human desires; abandoning singing, dancing, laughter, etc., because of abandoning friends, loved ones, young companions, etc., and enjoying pleasures, until death, turning away from human entertainment, these are the seven ways of living by begging. Enduring the suffering that arises from relying on these. Relying on the fatigue arising from diligence is: for diligence in virtuous actions, enduring the suffering arising from the fatigue, conflict of body and mind, and the source of exhaustion. Relying on accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings is: there are eleven things to be accomplished for benefit, and also enduring the suffering arising from them. Relying on temporary affairs is: the affairs of the begging bowl and Dharma robes, etc., ordination, and faultless farming, business, and serving the king, etc., are the temporary affairs of householders, and also enduring the suffering arising from them. Like this, no matter what suffering arises from the eight bases, one does not abandon one's respective diligence, enters into Bodhi, and what has already been entered does not become an obstacle to turning back, and one enters without displeasure. Third, for definitely thinking about the Dharma, generating forbearance of faith, there are eight objects of faith. First, the object of faith is the qualities of the Three Jewels. The object to be manifested is the suchness of the two selflessnesses. The object of desire is the great power of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, which are the power of clairvoyance, the power of the six perfections, and the power born together, these three. The object of acceptance and rejection is the cause of good and bad deeds, and their desirable and undesirable results, these should be divided into two. The object of meditation is the meaning of enlightenment to be attained, and the method of attaining it, the path of learning of the Bodhisattva, all these should also be divided into two. The object to be accomplished by following through listening and thinking is the object of knowledge, such as impermanence, etc.
