If you don't want bad results, you must turn away from the cause, so you must have the merit of abstaining from evil; being tormented by suffering is because you want happiness, and if you want happiness, you must do good, so you must have the merit of liking to do good; measuring your own feelings, thinking that other sentient beings also suffer like this, and thus generating compassion for those wandering in samsara. Through these and what they represent, you must also understand other merits, and repeatedly practice that suffering is the place of hope. Without suffering, there is no renunciation. Therefore, mind, you must be firm. Also, the merits of suffering are: with renunciation, it eliminates arrogance, generates compassion for those in samsara, abstains from evil and likes to do good. The second point is divided into two parts: thinking about the benefits of great meaning such as liberation, and thinking about the benefits of averting immeasurable suffering. The first point is: when I wandered in samsara in the past, even though I knew that suffering would arise for the sake of small desires, I despised many sufferings, and thus endured the cause of experiencing immeasurable suffering in the future, accepting many meaningless sufferings. Now that I clearly know that I have entered into the good deeds of accomplishing immeasurable benefits for myself and others, then I should bear a hundred million times more suffering than before, let alone smaller suffering? You must repeatedly strengthen this idea. The "Entering the Way of the Bodhisattva" also says: For the sake of desire, burning and so on, even if I have experienced thousands of times in hell, I have not accomplished my own benefit or the benefit of others. This is not too much damage, and it can also achieve great meaning, therefore, for the suffering of eliminating the harm of sentient beings, one should generate joy here. As it is said, thinking about those ascetic practices that did not accomplish any benefit for oneself or others in the past, why can't one now endure the suffering of accomplishing great meaning? Therefore, even if there is suffering, but being able to do such things, I have gained benefits, thus generating high aspirations. In addition, being deceived by bad friends, even on meaningless evil paths, one can endure the ascetic practices of jumping on three-pointed knives and serving five fires, and the needs of worldly people.

For the sake of the inferior, thinking of those who endure and abide in the many sufferings of farming, trading, warfare, etc., one should generate fearlessness through asceticism. Thinking about the benefit of averting immeasurable suffering is like this: if a person who is about to be killed is freed from being killed by having only a finger cut off, great joy will arise. Similarly, with such a small amount of human ascetic suffering, one can generally and permanently prevent endless samsara, and in particular, prevent the suffering of evil destinies such as hell. It is extremely good to think that way. If you think well about the differences between temporary and long-term suffering, courage that is not afraid of asceticism will arise. As it is said: Cutting off the hand of a person who is about to be killed, if one is liberated, why is it not good? If one can be freed from hell by human suffering, why is it not good? It is not difficult to get used to it from a young age, because there is nothing that does not become easy after getting used to it. Therefore, by meditating on small harms, one can also endure great harms. As it is said. Taking the armor of the mind that accepts suffering, and mixing it with small sufferings from the beginning, the power to accept suffering will become stronger and stronger. It is also said in the Compendium of Trainings: In this regard, if one first becomes accustomed to small sufferings, one will achieve becoming accustomed to difficult and very difficult things. For example, due to the power of habituation, all sentient beings regard suffering as happiness. Similarly, for all the sufferings that arise, placing the perception of happiness close, through habituation, one will abide close in the perception of happiness itself. As it is said. These comings are also asked by the violent ones, and one should be separated from the mind like a cottonwood petal. Also, as it is said in the Garland of Jewels: Daughter, in order to destroy all defilements, you must generate an unconquerable mind. As it is said. It requires a very firm mind of courage, and a weak mind will not do. Therefore, if one does not generate a timid mind from the beginning, then great suffering will also become a help. For example, when some warriors enter the battlefield, seeing their own blood flowing will become a cause for generating courage. If you have not heard of this from the beginning, or if you have heard it and say that I will not be like that, and underestimate yourself
