Transformation. Even if your desires are fulfilled with suffering, what good is it to you? If you become content, what could be worse than that? This hook set by the fisherman of afflictions is truly unbearable. The mind caught by it, even in the hellish pot, the hell's guards will surely torment me. Thus it is said. Like this, if one views with utter displeasure the obstruction of one's own and one's relatives' desires, the occurrence of unwanted things, and the perfect prosperity of one's enemies, then displeasure arises. If this displeasure increases, it generates hatred, and when utter displeasure ceases, displeasure also ceases. When displeasure ceases, hatred does not arise. Therefore, one should completely reverse the attitude of displeasure towards these things with the reasons stated earlier, and prevent anger from many aspects. Because the faults of anger are very great. The crucial advice for preventing anger is also like the reasons of the princes mentioned earlier, refuting one's own afflictions and then turning inward to destroy the greatest enemy, anger. These are the methods. Therefore, one should carefully examine with discriminating wisdom, and prevent anger from many aspects of reasoning, so that many kinds of anger can be prevented, and patience can arise from many aspects. Because this is an experience arising from a deep understanding gained through correct teachings from pure reasoning, the habitual tendencies are very stable. Those who abandon observation and meditation with discriminating wisdom are abandoning all these great bodhisattva practices. Know that this is the greatest obstacle to oneself and others from gaining the essence of leisure and endowment, and abandon it like poison. Second, generating patience to endure suffering is divided into three parts: the reasons why enduring suffering is absolutely necessary; the methods for generating it; and a detailed explanation from the perspective of the basis. First, as it is said in the Bodhicharyavatara: "The cause of happiness is rare, the cause of suffering is extremely numerous." Like this, we often encounter all kinds of suffering, so it is necessary to learn how to transform suffering into the path. If not, then as it is said in the Compendium of Trainings, either hatred will arise, or discouragement and cowardice will arise in the practice of the path.

Because after arising, it becomes an obstacle to engaging in virtue. Among them, some sufferings are caused by others, some sufferings arise from previous karma regardless of whether one strives in practice or not, and some sufferings, as explained below, will occur if one engages in virtuous deeds but will not occur if one does not. Like this, those sufferings that are inevitably produced by the power of previous karma and immediate circumstances cannot be avoided for the time being. Even if they occur, one must accept them. Without acceptance, on top of the original suffering, the suffering of worry created by one's own thoughts is added, making it extremely difficult to bear. If there is acceptance, even if the original suffering does not disappear, the suffering of worry that arises from focusing on it and feeling unhappy will never occur. For other sufferings, if one can find a way to transform them into aids on the path, the suffering will become very small, and thus one will be able to endure it. Therefore, it is crucial to cultivate the patience of accepting suffering. The second part is divided into two points: refuting the attachment of being displeased with the occurrence of suffering in all cases, and explaining that it is appropriate to accept suffering. The first point is: if the occurrence of suffering can be remedied, then there is no need to be displeased; if it cannot be remedied, then being displeased is of no use, neither necessary nor beneficial, but rather has disadvantages. If one is too sensitive, then even small sufferings become extremely difficult to bear; if one is not too sensitive, then even great sufferings can be endured. If it can be remedied, then, "If it can be remedied, why be displeased? If it cannot be remedied, what good does displeasure do?" As stated in the *Bodhicharyavatara*, I should not be too sensitive to heat and cold, rain and wind, disease, bondage, beatings, and so on, for doing so will only increase the harm. The second part is divided into three points: contemplating the qualities of suffering itself, contemplating the qualities of enduring the hardships of suffering, and the principle that becoming accustomed to it gradually from small things will not feel difficult. The first point is: there are five qualities. Like this, if there is no suffering, there will be no desire to renounce it, therefore there is the quality of encouraging one to turn towards liberation; when struck by suffering, arrogance disappears, therefore there is the quality of eliminating pride; when experiencing intense feelings of suffering, one will understand that it arises from non-virtuous deeds.
