Until reaching the essence of enlightenment, I take refuge in the supreme assembly, the noble Bodhisattvas, and the irreversible Sangha. Repeat this three times. For each refuge in the Three Jewels, offer one request for attention. Although the words of refuge in the Dharma are different from others, it is as in the ritual composed by Jowo (Atisha). The precepts after taking refuge are: the precepts previously taught during the stage of the small person should also be spoken by the teacher here. Accumulating merit is: in the ritual of generating Bodhicitta, it is said that prostrations and offerings should be made at this time. The commentary says that one should do as it says, remembering the seven branches, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and past and present spiritual friends. Offering to the Lamas should also be known at the time of the previous offering. The seven branches are to be done with either the Bhadracarya-pranidhana or the Bodhicaryavatara. Training the mind is: as the Lamp for the Path says, generate the mind by first sending loving-kindness and looking at sentient beings who are suffering, and as previously explained, clearly establish the objects of loving-kindness and compassion. The actual ritual is: in front of the teacher, kneel with the right knee on the ground or squat, join the palms, and generate the mind. As the Lamp for the Path says: "Without turning back, take a vow, generate the mind of enlightenment." And the ritual also says: "Until the essence of enlightenment." Therefore, it is not just generating the mind to attain Buddhahood for the sake of others, but aiming at generating that mind, vowing not to give up until enlightenment is attained, so that thought should be generated based on the ritual. If one cannot study the precepts of the aspiring mind, then one should not do it. If only the thought of becoming a Buddha for the sake of all sentient beings is generated by the ritual, then it is enough to do this ritual for all, whether or not one can study the precepts of the Bodhicitta. For the aspiring mind, when taking the entering mind with the ritual, which is permissible in both ways, it is not permissible to do it in any way if one does not study the precepts at all. Therefore, in the lineage of Nagarjuna and Asanga, for many vows that can and cannot be taken,

Thinking that allowing differences is a great misunderstanding. Furthermore, some say that as a practice for beginners, the ritual of taking vows is repeatedly taken, but because they do not understand the general precepts and especially the root downfalls, and do not explain the difference in how to practice, this is associated with great inappropriateness. In the "Advice to Gsalgyal," it also says: If one cannot train in the precepts such as giving, then relying on the statement that even just generating the mind of enlightenment will accomplish much merit, for those who cannot train in all aspects of the perfections, they should still generate the mind of enlightenment by skillfully taking hold of it with means, for the sake of great fruit. As stated in the "First Stage of Meditation," it is very clear that it is permissible to generate the mind of enlightenment without training in the precepts of giving, etc., but it is not permissible to take vows. The ritual for taking the mind is: May all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the ten directions consider me. May the teacher consider me. I, named so-and-so, in this life and in other lives, with the nature of giving, with the nature of morality, and with the nature of meditation, the roots of virtue that I have done, and the roots of virtue that I have caused to be done, and the roots of virtue that I rejoice in doing, with these roots of virtue, just as the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas of the past, and the great Bodhisattvas who abide on the great earth, generated the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. I, named so-and-so, also from this time forth, until I reach the essence of enlightenment, will generate the unsurpassed perfect great mind of enlightenment. I will liberate those sentient beings who have not been liberated. I will free those who have not been freed. I will cause those who have not breathed to breathe. I will cause those who have not completely passed beyond suffering to pass beyond suffering. This should be recited three times. Although it is not explicitly stated that it is necessary to repeat after the teacher in the refuge ritual and these two rituals, it is necessary. These are the cases where there is a teacher. If a teacher cannot be found, what should be done?
