The method of practice. First, there are three: arranging the place and displaying the objects of veneration to set out the offerings; making supplications and taking refuge; and stating the precepts of having taken refuge. The first is: In a secluded place, a person with heavy sins should prepare the ground well and make it clean. Anoint it with the five products of a cow, and sprinkle it with fragrant water such as sandalwood, and scatter fragrant flowers. Place the images of the Three Jewels, such as cast images, scriptures, etc., and the images of the Bodhisattvas, on a high seat, a low seat, or a beautiful platform. Prepare banners and other items, as well as offerings such as flowers, and arrange musical instruments, food, decorations, etc., as much as possible. Also, prepare the seat of the virtuous spiritual friend, decorated with flowers. The above matters require accumulating merit in advance by making offerings to the Sangha and offering tormas to the spirits. If there are no offerings, as stated in the Bhadrakalpa Sutra, it can be accomplished by offering a silk scarf, etc. If there are offerings, then one should seek them diligently without being stingy, and arrange them to the extent that even companions find it unbelievable. It is said that when Atisha's Tibetan disciples requested the generation of bodhicitta in Mangyu (Mangkang County) and Samye Monastery, he said, "If the offerings are not good, bodhicitta will not arise." If there is no image of the chief of the teachings with the blessing of consecration, then as a last resort, collect scriptures, especially the Prajnaparamita Sutra. Then, as described in the Stages of the Guru's Actions, invite the assembly of the noble ones, recite the Dharani of the Clouds of Offerings three times, and offer praise. After that, the disciple should bathe, put on good clothes, and join their palms. The guru should cause them to generate joy from the depths of their hearts for the qualities of all the Buddha-fields, and visualizing themselves in front of each Buddha and Bodhisattva, slowly practice the seven-branch offering. Among them, the former is mostly the seven-branch offering transmitted from Nagarjuna and Shantideva, and the latter is the two branches of prostration and offering transmitted from Maitreya and Asanga. When confessing sins, one must generate a feeling of regret, so the mind is not pleased; but the mind of bodhicitta must arise in a joyful state, so one should not say "because..." Atisha generated bodhicitta

and the rituals of vows, prostration and offering rituals, etc. Because in the Gradual Stages of the Guru's Activities, it is clearly stated that all seven branches should be done before generating the mind of enlightenment. If the reason is like that, then the traditions of Nagarjuna and Shantideva must also admit non-arising. Secondly, from then on, one must have the perception of the guru as the teacher, so one should prostrate with faith in the Buddha, offer gifts and mandalas, kneel on the ground with the right knee, join the palms, and pray for the sake of the mind of enlightenment. Just as the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Complete Buddhas of the past, and the great Bodhisattvas who reside on the great earth, first generated the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Bodhicitta, in the same way, I, named so-and-so, also request the teacher to generate the unsurpassed, perfectly complete Bodhicitta for me. Repeat this three times. Then take special refuge. Like this, the object of refuge is the Buddha Bhagavan, and the Truth of the Path, which mainly emphasizes the cessation of the Great Vehicle, and the Sangha of noble Bodhisattvas who do not turn back. From now until the attainment of the essence of enlightenment, especially for the sake of saving all sentient beings, thinking that the Buddha is the guide of refuge, the Dharma is the actual refuge, and the Sangha is the refuge companion who asks for help, this is the common thought. In particular, the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment says, "With minds that do not turn back." Therefore, from such a thought, one should strongly desire not to turn back at any time, and the behavior is the same as previously stated, and one should take refuge. Teacher, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from this time until I reach the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the Buddhas, the supreme of the two-legged ones. Teacher, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from this time until I reach the essence of enlightenment, take refuge in the Dharma, the supreme of all dharmas, the peaceful, free from attachment dharmas. Teacher, please listen. I, named so-and-so, from this time on.
