Pages 401 to 500. Pages 401 to 500. Having understood the seven-branch practice and refuge, generate the desire to protect them. Therefore, when traversing the path, although only a slight realization of emptiness appears, similarly, the mind of enlightenment should also be well cultivated and continuously improved, so that one progresses on the path, but even the name of this is not apparent. This is the single path traversed by all Buddhas. From the instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom teachings, the twenty-two types of mind generation are explained, and one should understand the way to traverse the path from the explanations of the great chariot masters. 3. Cultivating Higher Intention: After cultivating loving-kindness and compassion in this way, think, "Alas! These sentient beings who are dear and pleasing to me, are so lacking in happiness and tormented by suffering. How can I bring them happiness and liberate them from suffering?" Thinking in this way, take on the burden of liberating them, and train the mind even with just words. This was also mentioned slightly in the section on repaying kindness, but what is taught here is that loving-kindness and compassion that only hope for them to find happiness and be free from suffering are not enough. It is necessary to generate loving-kindness and compassion that can bring about the thought, "I will accomplish benefit and happiness for sentient beings," in order to explain this. These are not limited to the nature of the session, but it is more effective to remember them in all activities, including after the session, and cultivate them continuously. As it says in the Middle Stages of Meditation, "Compassion should be cultivated towards all sentient beings at all times, whether in meditative absorption or in all activities." Compassion is just an example, and it is the same for all objects and aspects of cultivation. The great teacher Chandra Gomi also said, "The tree of the mind has been without beginning, soaked by the sap of afflictions. It cannot be made into a delicious thing, what use are drops of the water of qualities?" Just as a large neem tree with a very bitter taste cannot be made sweet by pouring a few drops of sugarcane juice on it, the mind that has been soaked in the bitter taste of afflictions from beginningless time

Therefore, as it is said that contemplating the qualities of love or compassion, etc., in the continuum, short periods of practice will not change anything, so it is necessary to cultivate them continuously. Second, cultivating the mind that strives for enlightenment is to generate the desire to attain enlightenment by seeing that it is necessary to attain enlightenment for the benefit of others through the previously mentioned stages. However, that alone is not enough, as mentioned earlier during refuge, one must first increase faith as much as possible by contemplating the qualities of body, speech, mind, and activity. Then, because it is said that faith is the basis of desire, one must generate the desire to attain those qualities from the bottom of one's heart, and be certain that it is indispensable to attain omniscience for one's own benefit as well. Although there are many causes for generating Bodhicitta, it is particularly special to generate Bodhicitta by oneself, overwhelming it with compassion, as stated in the "Samadhi of the Mudra of Wisdom," and mentioned in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation. Third, identifying the fruit of practice, Bodhicitta, the general characteristic is as the meaning of the scripture of the Ornament of Clear Realization quoted earlier. The classification follows the Gandavyuha Sutra, as stated in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: "As one should know the difference between wanting to go and going, so should the wise gradually know the difference between these two." It is divided into two types: aspirational Bodhicitta and engaged Bodhicitta. Although there are many inconsistencies in this, the mind that thinks of becoming a Buddha for the benefit of sentient beings, or the aspiration to become a Buddha, one may or may not learn practices such as generosity, but as long as one has not taken vows, it is the aspirational mind. From the moment one takes vows, one should know that this mind is the engaged mind. As stated in the first chapter of the Stages of Meditation: "Therefore, initially wanting to become a Buddha for the benefit of all beings is the aspirational mind. Afterwards, taking vows and entering the accumulation path is the engaged mind." This is why it is said. There are many refutations to this, but I will not elaborate here. Second, relying on the treatises of Shantideva to practice, there are three points: first, contemplating the benefits of exchanging self and others and the faults of not exchanging self and others. The Bodhisattvacharyavatara says: Whoever desires to quickly protect self
