Sa. The practice of exchanging self and others should be done as the supreme secret practice. Thus, all happiness in the world arises from the desire for the well-being of others. All suffering in the world arises from the desire for one's own well-being. What need is there to say more? Children act for their own benefit, while the Buddhas act for the benefit of others. Look at the difference between these two. If you do not truly exchange your own happiness for the suffering of others, you will not attain Buddhahood, and there will be no happiness even in samsara. As it is said. Holding oneself dear is the door to all decline, while holding others dear is the basis of all perfections. Think in this way. If you become accustomed to the thought of exchanging self and others, you will be able to generate it. Just as someone who used to be your enemy, whose name alone caused fear, later becomes a friend, and you become greatly displeased if they are not around. Thus, by following the power of habituation, looking at others as yourself and yourself as others will also arise if you become accustomed to it. As it says in that very text: You should not turn away from difficulties, for by the power of this habituation, even someone whose name you hear and are afraid of, you will become unhappy if they are not there. And: Placing your own body in the place of others is not that difficult. If you think that another's body is not your own body, how can you generate the same mind towards it? This body is also formed from the blood and semen of your parents, and although it is formed from parts of another's body, the ego-grasping arises due to past habituation. Likewise, if you become accustomed to cherishing the bodies of others as you do your own, it will arise. As it says in that very text: Therefore, just as you grasp at the drops of semen and blood of others as "I," likewise, become accustomed to others. Thus, if you think well about the benefits and drawbacks, you will generate enthusiasm for meditating on it from the depths of your heart, and you will also see that you can generate it if you become accustomed to it. Therefore, the order of meditating on the method of exchanging self and others is: The so-called exchange of self and others, and making self into others and others into self. As it is said, this does not mean training the mind to think of others as "I," or to think of their eyes and so on as "mine," but rather to exchange the positions of the two minds of cherishing oneself and abandoning others, and to cherish others as you do yourself.

It is to generate the mind of abandoning oneself as if abandoning others. Therefore, the saying of exchanging one's own happiness and others' suffering is also to regard cherishing oneself as an enemy, thereby preventing excessive pursuit of one's own happiness, and to regard cherishing others as a virtue, thereby preventing the abandonment of others' suffering, and striving to eliminate it. In short, it is to not care about one's own happiness, but to devote oneself to eliminating the suffering of others. When training this mind, there are two obstacles: first, to regard oneself and others, the basis of one's own and others' happiness and suffering, as distinct entities like blue and yellow; second, to therefore think, "This is mine, so it should be accomplished or eliminated, this is others'," and thereby abandon it. The antidote to this is that oneself and others are not essentially distinct, but are interdependent, so the thought of others arises for oneself, and the thought of oneself arises for others, just like this mountain and that mountain. For example, for this mountain, the thought of that mountain arises, but when one reaches that mountain, the thought of this mountain arises. Therefore, no matter which blue one looks at, the thought of blue arises, which is different from other colors not giving rise to the thought of other colors. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "By diligently training in the equality of self and others, the Bodhicitta will surely arise. Self and others are interdependent, like the opposite banks, which are actually false. The opposite shore is not established by its own nature, but exists in dependence on this shore. If the self is not established by its own nature, what is there to depend on to establish the nature of others?" This means that it is only established in dependence on what is depended upon, and is not established by its own essence. Furthermore, in order to eliminate the thought that "the suffering of others does not harm oneself, so there is no need to strive to eliminate it," if this were the case, then because of fearing the suffering of old age, one would not accumulate wealth in youth, because the suffering of old age does not harm the young. Similarly, one would not use one's hand to eliminate the suffering of one's foot, because it is another. So it is said. Old age and youth are only representative, and can also be applied to the order of days or morning and afternoon, etc. If old age and youth are the same continuum, and the foot and hand are the same collection, then the duality of self and others...
