, accumulating in this way and giving all at once does not have superior merit. During the accumulation, many who come to beg for possessions are turned away, causing everyone to feel tormented, and only then are some who have not received given to. Therefore, it is important that this is stated in the Bodhisattva precepts, because during this time many afflictions such as stinginess arise, and the act of guarding and so on will become an obstacle to many virtuous deeds, and most of it will be lost in the middle, so it is seen that the final giving will not be accomplished either. How should the giving be done? With a clear and smiling face, speaking frankly, being respectful to whatever field it may be, giving with one's own hands, giving in time, not harming others, and enduring the suffering of hardship. The fruits of these are, as stated in the chapter of the Truthful One: "By giving with reverence, relatives and others will give with reverence; by giving with one's own hands, one will obtain those who give with reverence; by giving in time, things will be accomplished in time." And, by giving without harming others, one will obtain stable possessions; by giving while enduring discomfort, one's retinue will become close. As it is said. The Treasury states that giving with one's own hands will result in obtaining great possessions. Stable possessions mean that one's possessions will not be interrupted by others and will not be destroyed by fire and so on, as explained in the commentary on the Treasury. Furthermore, the practice of helping others to give is: if one has possessions, one should go to the homes of those who are stingy and have never given alms, and make them happy and comfortable, saying: "I have a large amount of possessions. Now, in order to perfect the perfection of giving, I desire beggars. If you meet beggars, do not turn them away, but either use my wealth to give to them, or bring them to me, and also rejoice in my giving." Thus, one should instruct them. They will not lose wealth and will be happy, and will do so. In this way, the seed of removing the stain of stinginess is planted in them, and gradually becoming accustomed to it, they themselves will also give small amounts of wealth and will not be attached to small things.

Relying on small generosity, one can obtain medium results, and relying on medium generosity, one can obtain great results. Similarly, for one's own Khenpo, disciples, and friends, if they are stingy and unwilling to give, or if they lack possessions, give them possessions and have them make offerings to the Three Jewels, while not doing it oneself. This accumulates a great deal of merit, and can subdue the afflictions of some, fulfill the Dharma desires of others, and also gather and ripen sentient beings. Similarly, if one does not have possessions, one should acquire wealth through crafts and work and give it away. Or, to the poor and miserly, one can tell them Dharma stories about wanting to give. Or, if beggars come, send them to the homes of wealthy and faithful people, and go there oneself to help them give as much as possible. Furthermore, choose the best of the items to be given and give them in order, and give away all the items prepared for giving. There are two types of objects: a brief explanation of objects that can and cannot be given, and a detailed explanation. The first is: the object given immediately creates a feeling of happiness that is free from the cause of bad rebirths, and ultimately benefits by abandoning evil or engaging in virtue; or even if it does not immediately create happiness, but is ultimately beneficial, then a Bodhisattva should give it to others. If the object given immediately creates suffering and is ultimately harmful, or is immediately pleasant but ultimately harmful, it should not be given to others. The second is: a detailed explanation of whether internal objects can or cannot be given, and whether external objects can or cannot be given. The first is: if one knows the way in which internal objects cannot be given, then one should know that the opposite of that can be given, so first the way in which they cannot be given will be explained. There are three aspects to this: From the perspective of time, what should not be given is: although a Bodhisattva has resolved from the beginning to give their body and so on to sentient beings, they should not give it even if someone asks for it until they have developed great compassion that will not be discouraged by the hardship of giving away their flesh and blood. As the Compendium of Trainings says: What kind of diligence makes one weary? It is when one is weak but carries a heavy burden, or when the time is too long.
