For those who engage in writing or faith immaturely, engaging in difficult actions, such as giving away one's own flesh and so on. Although this has already given the body to sentient beings, it merely prevents untimely complete use. Otherwise, because the Bodhisattva becomes weary of those sentient beings, the seed of Bodhicitta will be wasted, and the great accumulation of fruition will be wasted. Therefore, in the Sutra of the Noble Akashagarbha, it is said, "Untimely desire is the work of demons." It is also said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara, "Without a pure compassionate mind, one should not abandon this body, whether in this life or another, one should abandon it for the sake of accomplishing great meaning." From the perspective of need, one should not give away the body, one should not abandon the body for the sake of minor needs. As it says therein, "The excellent Dharma is the body of practice, one should not harm it for the sake of trivial matters, if one acts in this way, the wishes of sentient beings will be quickly fulfilled." From oneself, there are no obstacles to giving such as stinginess, and from others, if not giving the body, the need to accomplish the benefit of many sentient beings is great, even if begging for limbs and so on, one should not give, if begging for the sake of killing and other evil deeds that harm others or oneself, then one should not give oneself to others even temporarily. From the perspective of the beggar, what should not be given is, if the gods of the demon class and the sentient beings deluded by them beg for limbs and so on with an arrogant mind, one should not give, because this is harmful to themselves. If madmen and mentally disturbed people beg, one should not give, because these people are not begging sincerely, they are merely babbling. For these people, not giving not only does not lead to downfall, but giving will lead to downfall. Apart from these situations, in situations where one can give the body, one should give, that is, to permanently give after separating limbs and so on, and to temporarily give dominion such as becoming a servant in order to accomplish the needs of others in accordance with the Dharma. The extensive discussion of whether or not to give external objects is divided into two parts: the way of not giving external objects and the way of giving external objects. The first

Among the five inappropriate types of giving, from the aspect of time, an example of inappropriate giving is: such as giving afternoon food to monks and those observing vows. From the aspect of the object of giving, inappropriate giving includes: giving leftover food and drinks to those who strictly observe precepts; giving food and drinks contaminated by excrement, urine, saliva, mucus, vomit, and pus blood; to those who do not eat garlic, onions, and meat, do not drink alcohol, and even if they want to eat and drink these things, but because they hold precepts that prohibit them from enjoying these things, giving garlic and other such items, as well as items contaminated by them; to those who have well expressed the intention to give and are happy, but to unfriendly people, yakshas and rakshasas, and to those who are oppressed by violence or are ungrateful and forgetful for bad deeds, giving sons and servants, etc.; to patients for whom food and drinks are unsuitable or suitable but who ask immoderately, giving these things; to those who are very greedy and beg for food even when full, giving these things; to non-Buddhists who seek faults, who do not want to understand the meaning of scriptures but have a greedy mind, giving scriptures, etc. As stated in the Bodhisattva Precepts, these contents are recorded in detail in the "Compendium of Determinations on the Aspects of the Bodhisattva Grounds," and should be understood. It is said: If one gives written scriptures to beggars and those with childlike intelligence, it will be faulty. To beg from others in order to give to them is also faulty. If one thinks that one can make them accept and like these profound teachings, and gives only with such a mindset, then there is no fault. If one has beings with faith in scriptures that are disguised as the true Dharma or treatises of non-Buddhists copy them, or gives scriptures that have already been written and are held in hand, or begs from others to give them, it will be faulty. A Bodhisattva who holds scriptures that have already been written should also wipe them clean and then have people copy the Buddhist scriptures, or one should also fully understand that these scriptures are meaningless, and should also tell others well.
