This alone should be proclaimed. If someone comes to beg for an unwritten book, the Bodhisattva should ask him, 'What will you do with this?' If he says, 'Sell it and enjoy it,' the Bodhisattva, if he thinks that the book is prepared for the sake of Dharma, should not give it away. If he has the value, he should give the value. If he does not have the value, there is no fault in not giving both. If it is not prepared for the sake of Dharma, then in any case, in order to be able to enjoy it happily, that book itself should be given away. Similarly, if someone begs in order to copy a very bad scripture, there is no fault in not giving it away. Just as with someone who wants to copy a very bad scripture, it is the same with someone who wants to copy a medium scripture. If someone begs in order to copy a particularly excellent scripture, it should be known that not giving it away is with fault. ' Thus it is said. From the point of view of the basis, what should not be given away is: when one's own need for the book has not been fulfilled, and there is no stain of stinginess, like giving the book to someone who asks for it in order to know it. The reason why this should not be given away is: giving away this kind of Dharma is for the sake of accomplishing any of the three needs. If one does not give it away, the latter two needs will be greater, but if one gives it away, there will be no more. Moreover, the first need does not need to be accomplished. In this way, because one does not have the stain of stinginess, there is no need to eliminate the affliction of stinginess. If one does not give it away, one will see more accumulations of wisdom, but if one gives it away, it will not become greater. If one does not give it away, one can make this sentient being and all other sentient beings happy by accumulating the accumulation of wisdom for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, but if one gives it away, it is only this one sentient being who is happy. In the Bodhisattva-bhumi, the magnitude of the need is explained in this way. In the Bodhicaryavatara, it is also said: 'One should not give up the great for the sake of the small.' Thus it is said, so not giving is not just without fault. The way of not giving is: not to say in harsh words, 'I will not give it to you,' but to refuse after giving a hint with skillful means. Skillful means is this:

From the very beginning, I dedicate all possessions to the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the ten directions with a pure mind. For example, just as a monk, after examining the Dharma robes and other items for his preceptor and teacher, dedicates them and then holds them. Having dedicated them in this way, even though possessions are accumulated, one is called a Bodhisattva abiding in the lineage of the noble ones, and immeasurable merit increases. Therefore, they hold these possessions as if entrusted by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If a beggar comes and the item is suitable to be given to him, then the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas think, "There is nothing that has not been given to sentient beings," and then give it. If it is not suitable, then according to the ritual of examination, relying on the dedication of these items, (saying) "Good sir, this belongs to another; I cannot give it to you." Make him understand with gentle words. Or give two or three times the value of that scripture. In any case, make him think that it is not because the Bodhisattva is very attached to this and does not give it, but that this scripture must be something that cannot be given. Doing so is the giving of the wise. In terms of objects, what cannot be given are: food for one's own parents and livestock, and sons, wives, servants, etc., who have not been informed beforehand or who, even if informed, are unwilling to give, and people like sons and wives who are of the kind who live luxuriously. Although it is said here that it cannot be given to servants, because the object seems more important, it is included among the objects. In summary, the determination of the Bodhisattva grounds is: For the three Dharma robes and other remaining items permitted by the Buddha, if there is no thought of stinginess and there is a close need for the side of virtue, then even if one does not give to the beggar, there is no fault. As it is said: A renunciate Bodhisattva, other than the three Dharma robes, the remaining items permitted by the Buddha, which are in accordance with being in contact with the enjoyment and happiness of the body, if one examines and gives them separately to the beggars who desire them, there is no fault. If it is for the sake of the side of virtue and not belonging to the category of desire, even if one does not give, there is no
