Thus it is. Therefore, you should engage in giving to those who beg with compassion. So it is said. What kind of mindset needs to be abandoned? The absence of a mindset that clings to wrong views means: not thinking that giving has no result, thinking that harmful giving can be transformed into Dharma, thinking that giving combined with auspiciousness and good fortune, and thinking that merely perfecting giving can transform into detachment from the world and beyond. The absence of an arrogant mindset means: not despising beggars, not competing with others, and even after giving, not being self-righteous, thinking that oneself is generous, while others are not. In the Sutra of Cleansing Karmic Obscurations, it is also said: When ordinary people give alms, they cause misers to lose faith, and this also causes them to become angry and fall into hell, therefore it is said that giving is obstructed. Similarly, when guarding precepts, if one speaks unpleasant words to those who break precepts, it will cause many people to lose faith, and those who do not believe will fall into evil destinies. Abiding in patience and so on, not praising those who abide in the opposite of these, this is how precepts and so on are obstructed. So it is said. Therefore, one should act as it is said in the Praise of Immeasurable Qualities: When you have great learning and wisdom, do not praise yourself, and also highly respect those beings who have lesser qualities. When abiding in a collection of qualities, also tolerate small faults in your own behavior. So it is said. The absence of a dependent mindset means: not giving in the hope of gaining fame. The absence of a timid mindset means: being happy in your heart even before giving, and having no regrets during and after giving, and even if you hear that the giving of Bodhisattvas is very vast, do not be discouraged, do not despise yourself, but rather increase your joy. The absence of a back-turning mindset means: having no partiality towards enemies, friends, and ordinary people, and giving with equal compassion. The absence of a mindset that looks for returns means: not giving in the hope that others will repay the favor, but because beings lack happiness, are burned by the fire of desire, have no power to eliminate suffering, and are by nature suffering.

It is because of seeing suffering. There is no thought of looking at the Vipāka, because there is no expectation of the enjoyment and the perfect body of the Vipāka in the future, because all actions are seen as meaningless and beneficial to the unsurpassed Bodhi. It is not to prevent the expectation of those fruits temporarily, but to prevent clinging to the body and enjoyment of existence as something to be obtained. Furthermore, if giving is done, there is no thought of wrong livelihood, thinking that the king etc. will know that one is generous and be respected; not giving because of fear of becoming poor; no thought of deceiving the beggar, no displeasure, anger, and mental distraction; no weariness of the various wrongdoings of the beggar, and even if one sees the faults of the beggar such as self-deception, there is no thought of proclaiming it to others; believing that others cannot change, and giving with faith that each giving produces its own fruit. Regarding the application of how to give, there are two types, of which not giving with what kind of application is: not giving quickly, but giving after delaying; giving after being afflicted; arranging to do actions that do not conform to Dharma or worldly customs and then giving; reducing the amount promised to give earlier, giving bad or small things; giving while counting favors; it is enough to give at once, but giving little by little stingily; after becoming a king, seizing other people's sons and wives to give; forcibly taking the belongings of parents and servants etc. to give to others; giving alms in a way that harms others; staying comfortably oneself, but making others do it; giving after belittling the beggar by scolding, mocking, sarcastic remarks, harsh words; giving in violation of the precepts established by the Buddha; not giving according to how the enjoyment arises immediately, but accumulating it for a long time and then giving, these are the applications to be abandoned, so they should be discarded. Moreover, the giving accumulated by the Bodhisattva is accompanied by faults, and giving according to how the enjoyment arises is seen as without fault.
