It is said that a servant who is extremely devoted to his master is not guilty even if he uses things without the permission of the master (due to illness, etc.) who is not in his right mind. So it is said. If you don't actually give everything to sentient beings, then giving up seems false. Don't disbelieve because you feel that it is meaningless. It says in the [Compendium of Trainings]: "For a Bodhisattva who acts in this way, some people do not understand that point and should not disbelieve, because they should fully understand that the mind of giving has great wonders. Some people should not doubt this method." So it is said. Third, there are three divisions of giving: how all supports should act, the divisions according to each support, and the divisions of the nature of giving itself. The first is: the noble support to be made with six perfections is: relying on the mind of enlightenment, that is, acting by being inspired by it. The noble object is: in general, all objects of giving are available, but when dealing with special circumstances, that idea should not be abandoned. The noble purpose is: to give for the immediate happiness and future benefit of all sentient beings. The noble skillful means is: it is said to be grasped by non-discriminating wisdom. For beginners, it should be grasped by the wisdom of understanding that the Dharma has no self-nature. The noble dedication is: dedicating the merit of giving to perfect enlightenment. The noble purity is: preventing afflictions and cognitive obscurations, which is explained in the [Compendium of the Great Vehicle]. To make it complete with the six perfections, such as when doing Dharma giving, one should have the discipline of restraining the thoughts of hearers and solitary realizers, have faith and patience in the Dharma of omniscience, be patient with others' insults, have diligence in generating the desire to increase it more and more, not be mixed with the Lesser Vehicle, have one-pointedness of mind and dedicate the merit to perfect enlightenment, and have the wisdom to know that the object of giving, the giver, and the receiver are like illusions. If these six are complete, then the power is very great. These are said in the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses. The second is: in general, material giving is done by lay Bodhisattvas, while ordained Bodhisattvas should do Dharma giving.

From the Pratimoksha of Bodhisattvas: Shariputra, if any householder Bodhisattva fills Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River with the seven precious jewels and offers them to the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, Shariputra, if any ordained Bodhisattva teaches a four-line verse, this will accumulate even more merit than the former. Shariputra, the Tathagata does not allow the ordained to engage in material giving. Thus it is said. This is also considering that listening and so on may become obstacles, so it is said in the Compendium of Trainings that it is forbidden for the ordained to strive for material gain and then give it away. If it does not harm one's own virtuous activities, and one obtains much through the power of previous merit, then one should give material gifts. From the mouth of Sharawa also: I am not telling you the benefits of giving, but the faults of attachment. This is saying that ordained people laboriously seek and accumulate wealth, thereby causing many wounds to their discipline, and are not pleased with giving. There are three kinds of giving by nature: Dharma giving is to truthfully proclaim the excellent Dharma, to teach worldly activities such as crafts that are without fault, and to cause beings to abide in the basis of training. Fearless giving is to protect all sentient beings from the fear of humans such as kings and thieves, from the fear of non-humans such as lions, tigers, and crocodiles, and from the fear of natural disasters such as water and fire. Material giving is of two kinds: the giving of material things directly and the giving of mere intention. The first has three aspects: the manner of giving material things, what to do if one cannot give, and relying on the antidote to the obstacles of giving. The first has four aspects: the field to whom one gives, the intention with which one gives, the application of how one gives, and the object of what one gives. The first is tenfold: friends who help oneself, enemies who cause harm, ordinary people who neither help nor harm, those who possess qualities such as discipline, and those who possess such as broken vows.
