From the Compendium of Perfections: What increases the fault of stinginess? Those deceptions that hinder complete generosity from growing, Bodhisattvas should completely abandon them all. If something becomes an antidote to the mind of generosity, and obstructs the path to true enlightenment, such wealth or precious kingdom, Bodhisattvas should not accept. When acting in this way, if one becomes attached to possessions due to stinginess, one should remember that the Able One gave up all possessions and attained enlightenment, and I also vowed to follow in his footsteps. I have already given my body, enjoyment, and all virtues to sentient beings, and now I am still attached to enjoyment. My behavior is like an elephant that, when scorched by the sun, enters the water to bathe. When it reaches the shore, it rolls around on the ground, and seeing its body covered in dirt, it enters the water again. Then it acts as before. One should think like this and not be attached. From the same text: One should remember the excellent conduct of the Able Ones, and contemplate one's own vows to follow them. In order to eliminate attachment and clinging, contemplate these noble thoughts in one's mind. I have given my body to all beings, and since I have given my body, I have also abandoned the Dharma. For me to be attached to external things is like an elephant bathing, which is not reasonable for me. Thinking about the many benefits of giving in this way, generate great joy, and by thinking about the faults of clinging, generate great fear, and the mind of giving will arise naturally. Similarly, after cultivating loving-kindness and compassion, and contemplating the liberation stories of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, one should also generate the mind of giving. The method of generating it is, as stated in the "Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Body and possessions, as well as all the virtues of the three times, should be given without hesitation for the sake of accomplishing the benefit of all sentient beings." As it is said, taking the body, possessions, and roots of virtue as the objects of focus, mentally give them to all sentient beings. In this way, by reversing the craving for self-grasping towards all possessions, and repeatedly cultivating the mind of giving, one is called a Bodhisattva. As stated in the Compendium of Perfections: All of these

It is your reality. I have no pride in this. Such wonderful discriminations, again and again. The follower of the qualities of the fully enlightened Buddha, whoever possesses them, is called a Bodhisattva. The Buddha spoke of the inconceivable supreme ones. Thus it is said. Now, because faith is not yet mature and strength is weak, although in thought the body has already been given to sentient beings, flesh and blood, etc., are not actually given. However, if the thought of giving up body and life is not cultivated, because there is no habit, one will ultimately not be able to give up body and life, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings, therefore one must cultivate the thought from now on. After thus giving away food, clothing, and shelter, etc., to sentient beings from the depths of one's heart, when using them, if one forgets the thought of "using these for the benefit of others" and uses them with attachment for one's own benefit, that is a defiled downfall. If there is no attachment, but one forgets to establish the thought of focusing on all sentient beings, or if one becomes attached for the sake of another sentient being, that is a non-defiled downfall. If one perceives those things dedicated to others as the property of others and uses them for one's own benefit, it becomes taking what is not given, and if the value is sufficient, it becomes a root downfall of individual liberation, as stated in the Compendium of Trainings. Regarding this, some argue that since it is dedicated to all sentient beings, it is impossible for the value to be sufficient for one sentient being, therefore there will be no root downfall. Others say that since complete items are dedicated to each sentient being, that is unreasonable. Still others say that although it is dedicated to others, since they have not accepted it, there is no root downfall. The intended meaning is that for human beings, if one dedicates something from the depths of one's heart, and the other person also knows and accepts it, and then one realizes that it is the property of others and takes it for one's own benefit, if the value is sufficient, there will be a root downfall, and this is what it refers to. Therefore, speaking according to the views of other schools is also unreasonable. If one thinks, "Using the possessions of sentient beings themselves is for their benefit," then using them in that way is without fault. As stated in the Compendium of Trainings, "If one thinks of using the possessions belonging to the owner to protect the body belonging to the owner, there is no fault. The servant constantly works for the master, and the food that sustains him is not my property." Thus it is said. If one thinks that since the items have already been dedicated to sentient beings, using them without their permission would be a fault, there is no such fault, because the Compendium of Trainings says
