The practice is to generate and increase the mind of giving from various avenues, even without actually giving material things to others. Secondly, merely eliminating all miserliness towards the body and possessions does not transform into the perfection of generosity, because miserliness belongs to the category of attachment, and therefore the two Arhats of the Lesser Vehicle have also completely abandoned miserliness, including its seeds. Therefore, not only should the clinging to miserliness, which obstructs giving, be eliminated, but also the thought of giving all possessions to others should be generated from the depths of the heart. For this, it is necessary to contemplate the faults of clinging and the benefits of giving, so I shall speak about them. The Sutra of the Moon Lamp says: "This decaying body, and life also wavering uncontrollably, to things like dreams and illusions, these children are attached, having done extremely terrible deeds, controlled by sin, unwise ones gone riding the Lord of Death, these unbearable ones go to the hell of the mind." This means that the body is impure, life wavers like water on a steep cliff, and both body and life are under the control of karma, therefore there is no independent self. One should regard body and life as false, like dreams and illusions, and thereby reject attachment to them. If one does not reject them, one will be controlled by attachment, accumulate great misdeeds, and thus go to the lower realms. Furthermore, in the Dharani Sutra of Accomplishing Infinite Doors, it also says: "Some sentient beings will quarrel, the root of that is clinging, therefore abandon those things that cause craving, abandoning craving becomes Dharani." Furthermore, the Compendium of Trainings also says: "Thus my body and mind, each moment are passing away, if with this impermanent, defiled body, one can attain the eternal, stainless Bodhi, is that not a priceless treasure?" Furthermore, the Jataka Tales also say: "For a body that is selfless, perishable, and meaningless, a body that is suffering, ungrateful, and always impure, if it can benefit others, one who does not rejoice is not wise." As it is said, even if guarded with many efforts, the meaningless body that must certainly be abandoned, if given to others in thought, accomplishes many benefits for oneself and others. If one does not train the mind in this way, one should think, "I am foolish."

One should generate the mind of giving away one's body and so on to others. It is also said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "By giving up everything, one attains nirvana. I want to accomplish the nirvana of my own mind. Giving everything to sentient beings is superior to giving up alone." Thus it is said. It is also said in the Compendium of Perfections: "If you see that all enjoyments are impermanent, and great compassion becomes your nature, then giving to yourself, your home, and others, you will be able to understand in a very reasonable way. From what is given, fear will not arise. From what is kept at home, fear will arise. Unreasonable common things must always be protected. If you have given, those faults will not harm you. Giving brings happiness in this world and the next. Not giving brings suffering even in this life. The wealth of humans is like the nature of a shooting star. If they are not given away, they will disappear. Wealth that is not given away is impermanent and will disappear. Giving makes them a treasure that exists. By focusing on benefiting sentient beings, the wealth that is given becomes meaningful even if it has no essence. Those who give completely are praised by the wise. Foolish people are happy to accumulate. There is nothing that does not separate from complete possession. Giving always brings perfect prosperity. By giving, afflictions cannot be completely grasped. Stinginess is not the path of the noble, it is the cause of afflictions. Whoever gives is the best of paths. Other than that, the noble ones say it is a bad path." Thus it is said. All virtuous roots, whether large or small, should be dedicated and given away from the depths of the heart, for the sake of accomplishing great benefit and happiness for sentient beings, both temporarily and ultimately. In this way, by relying on each sentient being, one can obtain the corresponding merit, and thus easily complete the accumulations. It is said in the Ratnavali: "The merit of saying this, if it were to become a form, the worlds with the number of grains of sand in the Ganges would not be able to contain it. This was said by the Bhagavan, and reason also appears in this. The realm of sentient beings is immeasurable, and the intention to benefit them is the same." Thus it is said. Furthermore, one should not take the belongings and implements that obstruct the increase of giving and increase stinginess, and that cause the unarisen mind of giving not to arise, and that cause the arisen mind of giving to decline. Even if others give them, one should not accept them.
