Those with faults, those inferior to oneself, those equal to oneself, those superior to oneself, those who are wealthy and happy, and those who are suffering and impoverished. Regarding intention, there are three types. What kind of intention is necessary? It is necessary to think that by relying on this, one should perfect the paramita of giving, with the aim of giving the accumulation of unsurpassed enlightenment. From the beginning, the Bodhisattva has already given all possessions to sentient beings, so one should give as if receiving a trust, and regarding one's own possessions, one should think that they belong to others, which is to generate intention based on things. Regarding the fields of those who beg and those who do not beg, one should think that these are the ones who perfect my paramita of giving, they are my virtuous friends, which is to generate intention based on the field, so it is necessary to have these three intentions. As it is said in the Compendium of Perfections: If a beggar appears, the prince, in order to increase the accumulation of perfect enlightenment, should regard him as another and regard himself as the owner, and generate the thought of a virtuous friend towards him. So it is said. For the giving of each item, one should think that one is giving for this and that purpose. The detailed content of generating intention based on purpose can be learned from the Questions of Sagacious Arm and the Compendium of Perfections. The intention based on the field mentioned earlier must be done for everything, so it is a common intention. And the special intentions are: towards those who harm oneself, one should generate a mind of loving-kindness; towards those who suffer, one should generate a mind of compassion; towards those who have virtues, one should generate a mind of joy; towards those who help oneself, one should generate a mind of equanimity, and then give. For all fields, one must also maintain equanimity. The meritorious results of giving should also be dedicated to sentient beings such as beggars, and in particular, one should be affectionate towards the field of suffering. As Chandrakirti said: Giving that is free from stinginess, to those who are vessels or non-vessels, giving with an equal mind, that giving is better than the giver. Giving with love and the result of giving, both seek benefit simultaneously, giving without stinginess, that is praised by the noble ones. And it is also said in the Praise of Infinite Qualities: If one sees a lowly born and poor expectant, even without compassion, seeking other vessels with virtues for the sake of reward, such a person who has lost his mind, even if he gives, is not like beggars...
