To perfect the vast practices of Bodhicitta, one must go through countless lifetimes. Moreover, in order for progress to be made on the path, without a basis that is fully endowed with all the characteristics, even if one practices with a basis like the present one, which only has some of the characteristics, there will be no benefit. Therefore, one needs a basis that is perfect in all aspects. That is, one needs to have four perfections: the perfection of resources to be used, the perfection of the body to use them, the perfection of the retinue to use them with, and the perfection of the activities to accomplish whatever one undertakes. Even having just these perfections often becomes a cause for afflictions, so one also needs to not be controlled by afflictions. Even that is not enough; one also needs to be able to correctly engage in and refrain from what should be adopted and abandoned, and to clearly distinguish the aims of advancing and retreating. Otherwise, just as bamboo and water trees are destroyed by their own fruits, and a mule is destroyed by pregnancy, these very perfections will lead to destruction. If one has wisdom, one will know that this is the result of past good deeds, and will again strive to increase the causes, so that they continue to grow. If one does not have wisdom, then enjoying the fruits of past accumulations will exhaust them, and since one does not generate new ones, suffering will begin in the future. Therefore, the occurrence of these six perfections in another life will not arise from causelessness or from discordant causes, and the concordant cause is definitely the six perfections, so in this life one should always cultivate and repeatedly practice the six perfections. For the more effort that is put into the cause, the more differences will arise in the result. These are temporary higher states, while the ultimate higher states, such as the perfection of the body, are found in the state of Buddhahood. As it says in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The perfection of resources and body, the perfection of retinue and activity are higher states, always not going under the power of afflictions, and not being mistaken in actions." Thus, when studying the conduct of a Bodhisattva with such a basis, the activities of a Bodhisattva are ultimately twofold: accomplishing one's own benefit and the benefit of others. Therefore, in order to accomplish the two benefits, there is a need for a certain number. Among them, in order to accomplish the benefit of others, one must first benefit others with material things.
