Having heard, recognizing the root and near afflictions, once any affliction such as attachment or aversion arises in the continuum, one should, like thinking "This is that, it has come," identify it and fight with the affliction, one should understand it in this way. Secondly, there are two ways in which karma is accumulated: recognizing the karma to be accumulated, and how it is accumulated. The first has two types: karma of intention and karma arising from intention. The first, in the Compendium of Topics, it says: "What is intention? Intention is the mind's manifest action, it is the karma of the mind, it is the karma that causes the mind to engage in virtue, non-virtue, and the unspecified." As it is said, it is the mental intention that moves and urges the objects of mind that are in accordance with oneself. The second is the karma of body and speech that is aroused by that intention, as it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Karma is intention and what is done by it, intention is the karma of the mind, from it arise the karma of body and speech." Because of this. For the karma of body and speech, the distinct speakers divide it into two types, expressive and non-expressive, considering it only as form. To this, the teacher Vasubandhu prevents, saying that the intention that acts together with the expressive karma of body and speech is what is accepted, therefore both karmas are said to be intention. Generally speaking, karma has three types: virtuous, non-virtuous, and unspecified, but here are the first two. Virtuous karma also has two types, contaminated and uncontaminated, here it is contaminated, and among the contaminated there are two types, those in the continuum of noble ones and those in the continuum of ordinary beings, here it is the latter. Among them, non-virtuous karma is non-meritorious karma, meritorious karma is the virtuous karma included in the desire realm, and unwavering karma is the contaminated virtuous karma included in the form and formless realms. Thus, in the Treasury of Knowledge it is also said: "Meritorious karma is the virtuous karma of the desire realm, unwavering is born from the upper realm." Why is it called unwavering karma? For example, in the desire realm, some karma that matures on the basis of gods, some matures on the basis of humans and animals and hungry ghosts, this is the changing of the result, similarly, the karma that matures in another realm in the upper realm, does not mature outside of that realm, so it is called unwavering karma. As it is said in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Why is it that in those realms, all karmas mature?"

Because it is said, "For the sake of immovability." Secondly, the way to accumulate it is: In general, noble beings generate and accumulate virtuous actions, and although those who have entered the stream and those who return once also accumulate non-virtuous actions, it is impossible for noble beings to accumulate actions that throw them into the cycle of suffering and happiness. As it is said in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: "The root of samsara is action, therefore the wise do not act. Therefore the unwise are the doers, because they see the unwise." Moreover, the teacher Vasubandhu also said: "Those who see the truth have no throwing." Therefore, as long as one is under the control of grasping at the self of a person, one will accumulate throwing actions. Once one has directly realized the selflessness of reality, even if one is born into samsara due to the power of karma and afflictions, one will not newly accumulate throwing actions. Just as a strong person strikes a weak person, those who have entered the stream and those who return once do not accept self-grasping, because it is said in the Yoga Practice Ground to abandon it. Therefore, those who accumulate actions that throw them into samsara are all ordinary beings up to and including those who abide in the great supreme Dharma of the Mahayana path of application. Thus, being dominated by afflicted ignorance and the view of the perishable aggregate, if one manifestly engages in non-virtuous actions such as killing with the three doors, one will accumulate non-meritorious actions; if one engages in virtuous actions of the desire realm such as giving and keeping vows, one will accumulate meritorious actions; if one meditates on calm abiding and so forth, which are included in the realm of formless absorption, one will accumulate immovable actions. So, if one sees all the perfections of existence as faults, and is motivated by the desire for liberation, and performs many virtuous actions, and also the virtuous actions of a mind that is in accordance with wisdom that properly investigates the meaning of selflessness, are they the cause of samsara or not? In general, those on the path of accumulation and the path of preparation will freely accumulate throwing actions, but the virtuous actions that are motivated by such an intention and that are in accordance with wisdom that investigates selflessness are the antidote to craving for future existence.
