Furthermore, it is said in the Words of the Assembly: "Whatever is with form or without form, surpassing suffering upon suffering, possessing the nature of the bliss of meditative absorption, remains unmoving for an eon. That is not truly definitive liberation, and one will fall back from it again. From the waves of suffering of the lower realms, even if it arises as if liberated, it will not remain long even if one strives, like a bird soaring in the sky. Like an arrow shot by a child with all his strength, that has an end of falling. Just as a long-burning flame is destroyed moment by moment, the suffering called 'the changing of conditioned phenomena' constantly torments you." Thus it is said. Therefore, by contemplating the common and individual sufferings of beings in the five or six realms, one should generate renunciation from samsara. If so, one will contemplate what caused samsara, and thus thoughts will arise about the cause. Secondly, contemplating the order of engagement in samsara from the perspective of origination, there are three points: how afflictions arise, how they accumulate karma, and how death, transference, and rebirth occur. The first point is: the cause of accomplishing samsara requires both karma and afflictions, but afflictions are the main thing. Because if there are no afflictions, even if there are countless previously accumulated karmas, just as a seed without moisture and soil cannot produce a sprout, because karma does not have a common contributing factor, the sprout of suffering will not arise. Moreover, if there are afflictions, even if there is no previously accumulated karma, karma will be newly accumulated immediately, thereby taking the aggregates of the next life. Thus, in the Commentary on Valid Cognition, it is said: "Other karma that has transcended the craving for existence cannot throw [one into rebirth], because the common contributing factor has ceased." And, "Craving is, if it exists, it will arise again." Thus it is said. Therefore, it is very important to rely on the antidote to afflictions. And that depends on knowing afflictions, so one should be skilled in afflictions. There are four points to this: identifying afflictions, the order of how they arise, the cause of afflictions, and the faults of afflictions. The first point, the general characteristic of afflictions, is, as it says in the Compendium of Topics: "When any dharma arises, it appears with a nature of being extremely unpacified."
