That is, because of its arising, the mind stream becomes extremely unpeaceful, and that is the characteristic of affliction. As it is said, whatever arises makes the mind stream extremely unpeaceful. Among the individual characteristics, of the ten afflictions, attachment is: clinging to external or internal objects that are pleasing and desirable, just as oil seeps into cloth and is difficult to remove. Similarly, this also clings to its object and spreads, making it difficult to separate from that object. Anger is: focusing on sentient beings and suffering, as well as places of suffering such as weapons and thorns, and being mentally tormented, having a rough mind, and thinking of harming those objects. Pride is: relying on the view of the perishable, focusing on external or internal high and low, good and bad, and being conceited, acting in a manner of arrogance. Ignorance is: the affliction of not knowing because the mind is unclear about the four truths, the law of karma, and the nature of the Three Jewels. Doubt is: focusing on the three, such as the truth, and wondering whether it exists or not, whether it is or is not. The view of the perishable collection is: focusing on the aggregates of grasping, and having the wisdom affliction of viewing self and what belongs to self as "I" and "mine." Among these, "perishable" is impermanent and "collection" is many, so the basis for what this view observes is merely impermanence and many dharmas, and there is no permanent and singular person. It is named the view of the perishable collection in order to show this. The view of clinging to extremes is: focusing on the self that is clung to by the view of the perishable, and having the wisdom affliction of viewing it as permanent and enduring, or as annihilation without a connection from this life to the next. The view of holding views as supreme is: focusing on any of the three views of the perishable, extremes, and wrong views, and the aggregates of the viewer that arise in dependence on them, and having the wisdom affliction of holding them as supreme. The view of holding morality and discipline as supreme is: the morality of abandoning immoral conduct, and the discipline of determining the conduct of attire, behavior, body, and speech, and focusing on the aggregates that arise in dependence on them, and having the wisdom affliction of viewing them as purifying sins, liberating from afflictions, and definitely delivering from samsara. Wrong view is: saying that there is no past or future life, no law of karma, etc.

The contaminated wisdom that holds the creator, and Ishvara and the chief, etc., as the cause of going (to liberation). These ten afflictions are explained as they appear in the explanations of the Compendium, the Grounds of Yoga Practice, and the Treatise on the Five Aggregates. Second, the order of how they arise is: If one considers the view of the perishable and ignorance to be separate, for example, when a rope is piled up and a little darkness falls, so that the true state of the rope is not clear, then the thought arises that it is a snake. Similarly, from the darkness of ignorance that obscures the clear state of the aggregates, the delusion arises of clinging to the aggregates as self, and from that the other afflictions arise. If one considers the two to be one, then the view of the perishable itself is the root of the afflictions. Furthermore, when the view of the perishable clings to self, it makes a distinction between oneself and others. Having made that distinction, attachment arises towards one's own side and hatred arises towards the other side, and pride also arises focusing on self. And one clings to that self as permanent or impermanent, and one clings to the view of self, etc., and one considers bad behavior related to that to be supreme. Similarly, towards the teacher who teaches selflessness, and the results of actions, the four truths, and the Three Jewels, etc., that he teaches, one generates the wrong view that "these do not exist," or one generates doubt thinking, "are such things existent or nonexistent?" As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika, "If there is self, then one knows others. From the parts of self and others, attachment and hatred arise. From these and their connections, all faults will arise." Therefore, third, the causes of the arising of afflictions are six: The basis is the latent tendencies of the afflictions. The object is the appearance of objects that are in accordance with the arising of afflictions. Association is following bad friends who are not holy beings. Explanation is listening to wrong teachings. Habituation is increasing the power of previous habituation with afflictions. Attention is fabricating signs of what is attractive and unattractive, and attending improperly by clinging to what is impermanent as permanent, etc. Fourth, the faults are: When afflictions arise, first, the mind is completely afflicted, and one acts perversely towards the object, and one makes the latent tendencies firm, and one does not interrupt afflictions of the same kind, and oneself and
