The way to practice it. First, as explained in the case of the lesser and intermediate individuals, the preliminary practices and other stages should be adopted and practiced here as well. Thus, initially, one must refrain from being partial, clinging to some sentient beings and hating others. If equanimity is not cultivated, any love and compassion that arise will be biased. Because it will not arise based on those without bias, one should meditate on equanimity. There are three types of equanimity: equanimity of action, equanimity of feeling, and immeasurable equanimity. Here, it is the last one. Within that, there are two aspects: one is the state of cultivating the absence of afflictions such as attachment and hatred in sentient beings, and the other is oneself being free from attachment and hatred towards sentient beings, thus having equanimity. Here, it is the latter. The order of meditating on this is: because it is easy to arise, first, one should take as the object of focus a neutral person who has neither been kind nor harmful. Then, one should eliminate attachment and anger, and thus cultivate equanimity. If equanimity towards that person is achieved, then one should cultivate equanimity towards friends. Not having equanimity towards friends means being partial due to attachment and hatred, or not being equal due to the degree of attachment. Once one has equanimity towards friends, one should meditate on equanimity towards enemies. Not having equanimity towards enemies means viewing them as completely incompatible and being hateful. Once one has equanimity towards enemies, one should meditate on equanimity towards all sentient beings. So, what should one meditate on in order to abandon attachment and hatred? There are two aspects: from the perspective of sentient beings, since all beings equally desire happiness and do not want suffering, it is unreasonable to favor some by helping them and to distance oneself from others by harming them or not helping them. From one's own perspective, since there is no sentient being in samsara who has not been one's relative hundreds of times since beginningless time, who should one be attached to and who should one hate? As stated in the "Intermediate Stages of Meditation." Furthermore, regarding attachment to relatives, as stated in the "Questions of the Daughter Moon Supreme": "I have killed all of you in the past, and I have also been cut and chopped by you in the past. All have been enemies and killers to each other. How can you have thoughts of attachment?" This was said, and it was also mentioned earlier in the context of the faults of uncertainty.

One should contemplate how all enemies and friends quickly change and pass away. This will reverse both anger and attachment. This does not need to be done based on the distinction of enemy or friend, so there is no need to reverse the concept of enemy and friend, but rather to prevent the thought of distinguishing with attachment and aversion based on the reason of enemy and friend. To accomplish everything as having a pleasing appearance, as it says in the Middle Stages of Meditation: "By moistening the mind-stream with the water of loving-kindness, making it like fertile soil, and then planting the seed of compassion, it will easily and completely grow. Then, having imbued the mind-stream with loving-kindness, one should meditate on compassion." The loving-kindness mentioned here is the pleasing appearance of seeing all sentient beings as beloved children. By meditating on equanimity, the natural tendencies that have not been balanced by attachment and aversion are pacified, and like a field that has been well tamed, it is moistened with the water of loving-kindness, which is seen as pleasing, and if a strong seed of compassion is planted, great compassion will easily arise. Understanding this is extremely important. Among these three, the first is meditating on (all beings as) mother: Because samsara has no beginning, one's own birth also has no beginning, so birth and death are continuous. In samsara, there is no instance of not having taken this body, not having been born in this place, and not having been a relative such as a mother. As quoted in The Basis of the Earth: "From a long time ago, that place where you were not born, did not go, and did not die, is difficult for me to see. From a long time ago, which sentient being has not been your father, mother, brother, sister, teacher, Khenpo, Lama, or like the position of a Lama, is difficult for me to see." Moreover, not only has it not been done in the past, but it will also infinitely not be done in the future. Therefore, one should think in this way and firmly seek a firm conviction that one has not been a mother. If this arises, then it is easy to generate remembering kindness, etc., but if it does not arise, there is no basis for remembering kindness, etc. Meditating on remembering kindness: After meditating on all sentient beings as mothers, one should first meditate on the mother of this life, so that it can arise quickly. According to the view of Potowa, one should meditate in this way: clearly visualize the image of the mother in front, not only now, but also in samsara,
