If one cherishes something very much, then even the slightest suffering seems unbearable. Seeing an enemy suffer, not only does the thought of separation not arise, but one even wishes it were greater or that one would not be separated from it, and this is because of unpleasantness. The degree of unpleasantness determines the degree of joy one feels at the suffering. There is neither intolerance nor joy at the suffering of a neutral person, because there is neither pleasantness nor unpleasantness. In this way, contemplating sentient beings as friends is for the sake of generating pleasantness. The ultimate purpose of friends is not this, so contemplating the mother, remembering her kindness, and repaying her kindness are the means of accomplishing pleasantness and cherishing. The love that cherishes sentient beings as if they were one's only child is the fruit of these three, and it gives rise to compassion. There is no certainty of cause and effect for love and compassion that desire to give happiness. Therefore, the three objects of focus, such as knowing the mother, are the basis for both love that desires to give happiness and compassion that desires to be free from suffering, so one must strive for this. Contemplating all sentient beings as friends as a cause for generating bodhicitta is taught by the master Chandrakirti, the monk Chandra, and the master Kamalashila. The way in which higher intention and bodhicitta become the result is as follows: When compassion arises from gradually training the mind in this way, the desire to attain Buddhahood for the sake of sentient beings arises, and that alone is sufficient. But if one wonders what to do by inserting higher intention in between, then the immeasurable love and compassion that wishes sentient beings to have happiness and be free from suffering is also present in the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. However, taking upon oneself the burden of accomplishing happiness and eliminating suffering for all sentient beings is not something that non-Mahayanists have. Therefore, one must generate a higher intention that surpasses the thought of courage. Therefore, it is not enough to merely think that all sentient beings should have happiness and be free from suffering; one must take on the burden of accomplishing these things oneself from the depths of one's heart, so one must distinguish these differences. As it says in the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati, "Sagaramati, for example, a merchant or householder desires an only child."

When seeing things that are disgusting, painful, and unpleasant, there is no discomfort. The child, being young and ignorant, fell into a cesspool while playing. The child's mother and relatives saw the child fall into the cesspool and cried out loudly, lamenting and sighing, but no one entered the cesspool to rescue the child. Later, the child's father came to that place and saw his only child fall into the cesspool. He immediately, with an anxious mind, longed to rescue his only child, and without hesitation, jumped into the cesspool and rescued his only child. Therefore, the three realms (desire realm, form realm, and formless realm) are like a cesspool, the only child is like sentient beings, and the mother and relatives are like the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who see sentient beings fall into samsara and lament and sigh, but are unable to liberate them. The merchant and householder are metaphors for Bodhisattvas. It is said that Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas also, like a mother, generate compassion for their cherished only child who has fallen into a cesspool. Therefore, one should rely on compassion and generate the altruistic intention to take on the responsibility of liberating sentient beings. After generating the mind to liberate sentient beings in this way, one cannot even accomplish the benefit of a single sentient being with one's current abilities. Moreover, even if one attains the fruit of two Arhats, one can only help a few sentient beings to attain liberation. Because one cannot satisfy all-knowing wisdom, when thinking about who can perfectly accomplish the temporary and ultimate benefit of limitless sentient beings, one knows that only the Buddha can do it, therefore one aspires to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of sentient beings. Second, the actual gradual training is divided into three parts: training the mind to strive for the benefit of others, training the mind to strive for Bodhi, and recognizing the fruit of training - Bodhicitta. The first part is divided into two parts: accomplishing the basis for generating Bodhicitta, and actually generating Bodhicitta. The first part is further divided into two parts: cultivating equanimity towards sentient beings, and regarding all sentient beings as pleasing objects.
