Firstly, driven by such great compassion, Bodhisattvas, disregarding themselves, engage in accumulating merit for the sake of greatly benefiting others, even though it is extremely difficult, lengthy, and tiring. As stated in the 'Arya Adhimukticaryā,' 'For the sake of fully maturing all sentient beings, there is no birth of suffering that (a Bodhisattva) does not take; and there is no birth of happiness that (a Bodhisattva) does not relinquish.' Like this, if one engages in extremely difficult practices, one will soon complete the accumulation of merit and undoubtedly attain the state of omniscience. Therefore, the root of all the Buddha's teachings is solely great compassion. What is important at the end is that even when the Buddhas attain the fruit, they do not abide in peace like the Hinayana practitioners, but rather work for the benefit of beings as long as space exists, and this is also the power of great compassion. Without it, one would become like a Shravaka. In the 'Madhyamaka-krama,' it says, 'Because of being completely seized by great compassion, the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, even though they have attained all their own perfect benefits, still abide until the realm of sentient beings is exhausted.' And, 'The cause of the Bhagavat's non-abiding Nirvana is that very great compassion.' For example, just as for crops, the initial seed, the intermediate water, and the final ripening are important, so too for the crop of Buddhahood, great compassion is important in the beginning, middle, and end. As the glorious Chandrakirti said, 'Because compassion is the seed of this excellent crop of the Victorious Ones' enlightenment, and like water for its growth, and like the enjoyment of its fruits for a long time, therefore, I will first praise compassion.' Having seen this meaning, it is also said in the 'Dharma Samgraha Sutra,' 'Bhagavan, a Bodhisattva should not study many dharmas. Bhagavan, if a Bodhisattva holds and understands one dharma well, all the Buddha's dharmas are in the palm of his hand. What is that one dharma? It is great compassion. Bhagavan, great compassion is all the Buddha's dharmas.'

All are in the palms of the Bodhisattvas. Blessed One! For example, wherever the precious wheel of the Wheel-Turning King is, there is the entire assembly of the army. Blessed One! Similarly, wherever the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is, there are all the teachings of the Buddhas. Blessed One! For example, if the life force exists, other faculties will also exist. Blessed One! Similarly, if great compassion exists, other qualities of the Bodhisattva will also arise. Thus it is said. If one gains certainty in such a crucial point of the path, which is established by limitless scriptures and reasoning, why would one not regard the Dharma cycles with compassion as the root of Bodhicitta as the supreme instruction? Therefore, Zhang Nachungtonpa said: Even if one asks Jowo for instructions, it will only amount to abandoning worldly concerns and cultivating Bodhicitta. Geshe Tonpa, annoyed, said: That is the essence of Jowo's instructions, he is one who understands the key points of the Dharma. Gaining certainty is difficult only in this, so one must repeatedly accumulate purification and look at the scriptures and commentaries such as the Lamrim Chenmo to seek firm certainty. As glorious Machik said: Your mind is a jewel, the seed of perfect enlightenment, only you, the brave one, understand its essence, others cannot fathom it. Thus it is said. Second, how other causes and effects transform into its causes and effects. The way that knowing the mother transforms into the cause of love is: Generally, merely wanting to be free from suffering can arise by repeatedly thinking about the suffering of sentient beings. However, in order for that mind to arise easily, powerfully, and stably, it is necessary to have a form of that sentient being that is pleasing, cherished, and pitied. For example, one cannot bear the suffering of a relative, one rejoices at the suffering of an enemy, and one mostly abandons oneself to indifference when a neutral person suffers. The former is because there is affection, and the more one cherishes, the more unbearable the suffering becomes. If the cherishing is small or medium, the degree of unbearableness is also small.
