and liberate. (This is one sentence.) Even if one thinks that one is only clearing away the headaches of sentient beings, one still has the thought of benefiting others. If one has immeasurable merit, one desires to remove the immeasurable suffering of each sentient being, and one desires to accomplish immeasurable qualities for each sentient being, what more needs to be said? (This is one sentence.) All other virtues are like trees by the water, which produce fruit and then are exhausted. The tree of bodhicitta, however, constantly bears fruit, so it does not diminish but increases. (This is one sentence.) Secondly, regarding how to generate bodhicitta, there are four points: what causes it to arise, the order of cultivating bodhicitta, the standard of arising, and the manner of taking vows. The first point has three aspects, of which the manner of arising from four conditions is: based on personally seeing or believing in the inconceivable power of the Buddha or Bodhisattva, or based on hearing, thinking how powerful the bodhi that one abides in and enters is, thereby generating bodhicitta. Even if one has not seen or heard such things, when listening to the scriptures based on unsurpassed bodhi, one develops admiration for the wisdom of the Buddha, thereby generating bodhicitta. Even if one has not heard the Dharma, but when one sees that the Bodhisattva's sacred Dharma is about to decline, one thinks that the existence of such Dharma can eliminate the suffering of immeasurable sentient beings, therefore I must generate bodhicitta for the sake of the Bodhisattva's Dharma to abide long. Even if one does not see the Dharma declining, but in an evil age, in an age dominated by ignorance, shamelessness, impudence, jealousy, and stinginess, it is difficult to even generate the bodhicitta of a Hearer or Solitary Realizer, let alone generate unsurpassed bodhicitta. For the time being, if I generate bodhicitta, others will do so as well, thinking that generating bodhicitta is difficult, thereby generating bodhicitta, these are the four. The way to generate bodhicitta is: the sutra says to generate the desire to attain great bodhi. What causes it to arise? The first is: seeing or hearing miraculous wonders, one is amazed, thinking that I must attain such bodhi. The second is: hearing the virtues of the Buddha from a Dharma speaker, one first develops faith, and then develops the desire to attain those virtues.

Third, unable to bear the decline of the Mahayana teachings, the desire to attain the wisdom of the Buddha arises. In this case, if the teachings do not decline, it is seen that the suffering of sentient beings can be averted, so although there is an intention to eliminate suffering, the main cause of generating Bodhicitta is the inability to bear the decline of the teachings. If it were not so, it would be a repetition of what is said below about arising from compassion. Fourth, seeing that the mind of great purpose is rare, it is mainly motivated by this, and the desire to attain Buddhahood arises. This generation of Bodhicitta seems to be established from the perspective of generating the desire to attain enlightenment, rather than from the perspective of working for the benefit of others. If one does not generate the desire to attain Buddhahood through cultivating faith in the qualities of the Buddha, the thought that one can be satisfied with mere peace to accomplish one's own benefit will not be reversed. However, if one cultivates love and compassion and sees the need for the benefit of others, and desires to attain Buddhahood, then the thought that one can be satisfied with mere peace to accomplish the benefit of others can be reversed, but the former clinging cannot be reversed, and there is no other way to prevent it. It is not that it is not necessary to reverse the thought that one can be satisfied with mere peace to accomplish one's own benefit, because the Hinayana, which only liberates from Samsara, only has one aspect of abandonment and realization, so there is no perfect self-benefit. Although they are liberated from the decline of existence, they are not liberated from the decline of peace. Perfect self-benefit is said to be the Dharmakaya of the Buddha. Therefore, after cultivating faith in the qualities of the Buddha, let alone benefiting others, even for the sake of accomplishing one's own benefit, if one sees that it is indispensable to attain Buddhahood, then it will become a great cause for not regressing into the Hinayana. In the first two types of Bodhicitta mentioned earlier, there is no appearance of being led by love and compassion. However, from other scriptures and treatises, there are many instances where merely seeing the qualities of the Rupakaya and Dharmakaya of the Buddha leads to the desire to attain Buddhahood, which is said to be the generation of Bodhicitta. Moreover, vowing to place all sentient beings in Buddhahood is also said to be the generation of Bodhicitta. Therefore, each of these two must also be counted as the generation of Bodhicitta,
