For the Bodhicitta that is complete in every aspect, it is not enough to have just the desire to attain Buddhahood, prompted only by seeing the necessity of benefiting others. Therefore, it is also necessary to have the desire to attain Buddhahood, seeing that it is indispensable for one's own benefit as well. Moreover, this is not to disregard the benefit of others, but to strive for it for the sake of others as well. As it is said in the Ornament for Clear Realization: "For the sake of others, one desires perfect and complete enlightenment; this is Bodhicitta." Because it speaks of both enlightenment and the pursuit of benefiting others. It arises from four causes: Bodhicitta arises by relying on four factors: having a complete lineage, being embraced by a virtuous friend, having compassion for sentient beings, and not being discouraged by the hardships of samsara. It arises from four powers: wanting to attain perfect enlightenment through one's own strength is one's own power; wanting to attain perfect enlightenment through the strength of others is the power of others; having been accustomed to the Great Vehicle in the past, so that merely hearing the praises of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas gives rise to it, is the power of the cause; and here, relying on virtuous friends, listening to the Dharma, and cultivating virtue by thinking about it for a long time is the power of application. These eight causes and conditions, relying on each separately or collectively, are stable if they arise from one's own power and the power of the cause. If they arise from the power of others and the power of application, relying on these causes and conditions, they are unstable, as stated in the Bodhisattva Grounds. Thus, as the teachings in general and the teachings of the Great Vehicle in particular are nearing decline, in this age that is even more degenerate than the degenerate age, having understood well that it is very rare to generate Bodhicitta from the depths of one's heart, one should rely on a virtuous friend and strive to listen to and contemplate the Great Vehicle's scriptures. One should not be involuntarily urged by others, nor follow the crowd, nor follow trends, but rely on one's own strength to establish the root of generating Bodhicitta from the depths of one's heart, because all the actions of a Bodhisattva must rely on this. Second, the stages of training the mind of enlightenment: there are two ways to train, the oral instruction of the seven causes and effects transmitted from Jowo Je (Atisha), and the one based on the teachings of the Bodhisattva Shantideva. The seven causes and effects arise from the Bodhicitta of perfect and complete enlightenment, and that mind arises from higher intention.

Thought arises from compassion, compassion arises from love, love arises from gratitude, gratitude arises from remembering kindness, and remembering kindness arises from seeing others as oneself, these are the seven aspects. There are two points here: first, establishing certainty about the order; and second, actually training in the order. The first point is further divided into two: first, explaining that the root of the Mahayana path is compassion; and second, explaining how other causes and effects transform into the cause and effect of compassion. The first point is further divided into three: first, the most important thing is that if the mind is moved by great compassion, then one will definitely vow to liberate all sentient beings from samsara. If compassion is weak, one will not do so. Therefore, taking on the burden of liberating all beings depends on compassion. If one does not take on this burden, one cannot be considered a Mahayanist. Therefore, compassion is the most important thing at the beginning. As it is said in the Teaching of Inexhaustible Intelligence: 'Venerable Sharadvatiputra, the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas is inexhaustible.' Why is that? Because it goes before. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, just as the breath that goes in and out is the forerunner of the life force of a person. Similarly, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is the forerunner of the perfect accomplishment of the Great Vehicle.' And also in the Gaya Gori it says: 'Manjushri, what is the beginning of the conduct of the Bodhisattvas? What is the dwelling place?' Manjushri said: 'Son of the gods, the beginning of the conduct of the Bodhisattvas is great compassion, and the dwelling place is sentient beings.' Therefore, having made that vow, if one does not train in the vast accumulation of the two accumulations, one will see that it cannot be accomplished, and therefore one will engage in the vast accumulation of merit that is difficult to do, so it is the basis for engaging in conduct. Secondly, the most important thing in between is that, having generated such a mind once and entered, even though one has entered, seeing that the number of sentient beings is vast, their actions are evil, and what needs to be learned is extremely difficult and limitless, and the time required is immeasurable, one becomes discouraged and falls into the lesser vehicle. Therefore, it is not just generating great compassion once, but one must become accustomed to increasing it, so that one does not look at one's own happiness and suffering, and one does not become weary of benefiting others, thereby easily perfecting all accumulations.
