It's like a person who is driven mad by alcohol, blind, and without a guide, stumbling at every step and heading towards a terrifying cliff. If that mother doesn't rely on her child, who else can she rely on? If the child doesn't save the mother from that terrible situation, who else will? So, she must be saved. Similarly, all sentient beings who have been our mothers, due to the disturbance of the afflictive demons, their minds cannot remain at peace, and thus they are driven mad by losing control over their knowledge. They are separated from the eyes that see the path of higher realms and definite goodness, and they have no guide of a true friend. At every moment, they stumble due to the faults of their actions. Seeing them generally heading towards samsara and especially towards the cliff of the lower realms, the mother must also rely on the child, and the child must also save the mother. So, thinking in this way, one should repay the kindness of liberating from samsara. As it says in the Compendium of Trainings: 'Driven mad by afflictions, blinded by ignorance, on the path full of cliffs, stumbling at every step, oneself and others are always the source of suffering, all beings equally suffer.' Having seen it in this way, one should not find fault with others, and if one sees even a little bit of good qualities, one should be amazed. Although it is said like that, here too, one can add the aspect of being pitiful. Secondly, there are three aspects to truly generating that mind, first is cultivating loving-kindness. The object of loving-kindness is: sentient beings who do not possess happiness. The aspects are: wishing that they could have happiness, hoping that they will have happiness, and resolving to make them have happiness. The benefits are: As it says in the King of Samadhi Sutra: 'In countless billions of lands, with immeasurable offerings of various kinds, constantly offering to the noble ones, it cannot match the number and extent of the mind of loving-kindness.' It means that because the object is so vast, it is even greater merit than constantly making offerings in the ultimate realm. It also says in the Ornament of Manjushri's Pure Land Sutra: 'In the northeast direction, there is a world called Adorned with a Thousand Billions of Great Powerful Kings of Buddhas, where sentient beings are filled with happiness like a monk entering cessation.' Practicing pure conduct there for a hundred billion years is not even comparable to benefiting all sentient beings in this world for even the duration of a finger snap.

If one generates a mind of loving-kindness towards all beings, one will accumulate much more merit than before, let alone abiding in loving-kindness day and night. Thus it is said. In the Garland of Jewels, it is also said: The food of three hundred deer, Given three times a day, The merit of a moment of loving-kindness, Cannot be measured by rain. Gods and humans will become loving, They will also be protected, Mindful ease and much happiness, Freedom from harm by poison and weapons, Obtaining benefits without effort, Will be reborn in the Brahma realm, Even if not liberated, Loving-kindness will obtain eight qualities. Thus it is said. If there is loving-kindness, gods and humans will be loving and naturally gather, and the Victorious One also defeated the armies of Mara with the power of loving-kindness, so loving-kindness becomes the best of protection. Therefore, even if it is difficult to generate, one must strive. In the Compendium of Trainings, it is said: For the verses from the Sutra of Golden Light that show the cultivation of loving-kindness and compassion, think with all your heart, and even utter them in words and cultivate them. That verse is: With the sound of the great drum of the Sutra of Golden Light, In this three-thousand world, this three-thousand world, May the suffering of the lower realms, the suffering of Yama, and the suffering of poverty be pacified. And so on. The order of cultivating loving-kindness is: First cultivate towards friends, then towards neutral people, then towards enemies, and then cultivate towards all beings in order. The way to cultivate is: Just as compassion arises when one repeatedly thinks about how beings suffer from suffering, so too, one should repeatedly think about how beings do not have happiness with or without defilements, and how they lack happiness. When one becomes accustomed to this, the desire to encounter happiness will naturally arise. One should also bring to mind the various kinds of happiness and bestow them upon beings. When cultivating compassion, The object of compassion is: Beings who suffer from the three kinds of suffering in various ways. The aspect is: Wishing that they may be separated from these sufferings, wishing that they may be separated, and wishing that I may separate them. The order of cultivation is: First cultivate towards friends, then towards neutral people, then towards enemies. When one can maintain a balanced mind towards enemies as one does towards friends, gradually
