If found, subtle developments of doubt will not arise. Furthermore, sleep and drowsiness, excitement and laziness, carelessness and shamelessness, lack of shame and immodesty, forgetfulness and non-mindfulness, which are called near afflictions, are the near causes that obstruct the path to virtue. Therefore, having recognized the faults, rely on the antidotes and cultivate the habit of immediately weakening their power. The faults are: In the "Letter to a Friend," it says: "Excitement and regret, harmful thoughts and drowsiness, sleep and desire, longing and doubt, these five obscurations are the thieves who steal the wealth of virtue, know this." Also, in "Encouraging Excellent Intention," it says: "Whoever delights in sleep and drowsiness, phlegm, wind, and bile, these will arise predominantly in that person's body, and their elements will be greatly disturbed. Whoever delights in drowsiness and sleep, due to impure food, their stomach will be unclean, their body heavy, their complexion unpleasant, and their speech will not be clear." It also says: "Whoever delights in drowsiness and sleep, they will be foolish and their desire for Dharma will decline, they will lose all the qualities of a child, white will decline and they will go to darkness." Thus, many faults are spoken of. In the "Mindfulness Sutra," it says: "The root of all afflictions is laziness; whoever has it, whoever has laziness, has no Dharma." Also, in the "Compendium," it says: "The basis of carelessness is a foolish child with a ruined mind; just as a merchant protects their wealth, the wise should be mindful." Also, in the "Jataka Tales," it says: "Even for the sake of being a god, abandoning shame and doing what contradicts Dharma in the mind, it is better to hold a clay bowl, wear ragged clothes, and see the wealth of the enemy." Also, in the "Letter to a Friend," it says: "Freedom, a complete body, mindfulness, and the Sugata's (Buddha's) single path to go, are shown as near. This should be diligently guarded, for the loss of mindfulness destroys all Dharma." Also, in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life," it says: "Even if one is rich in learning, faith, and diligence, if one lacks mindfulness, one will be like being among a gang of thieves, and all virtues will be lost." Thus it is said.

Thus, although unable to prevent afflictions and near afflictions, it is now necessary to regard them as enemies, without favoring or siding with them. Therefore, take the side of the antidote and strive to subdue afflictions. Make the vows you have taken completely pure. The disciple of Jowo Chenpo, Palden Gonpawa, also said: "Neu Zurpa, if someone asks you, Yewa, where do your Geshes place the essence of the instructions tomorrow or the day after? They will answer that it is placed on direct perception or seeing the face of the tutelary deity. You should say that it is placed on becoming more and more certain about the law of cause and effect, and purely guarding the vows you have taken." Therefore, it must be understood that the accomplishment of meditation is also placed on the afflictions such as ignorance becoming less and less, as they said. Even in fighting with others, which only produces evil and suffering in both this life and the next, all the suffering during that time is endured even at the cost of life, and they boast that the wounds and injuries were caused at that time. Then, when striving to destroy afflictions, diligent patience is even more reasonable. The Bodhicharyavatara says: "Even if a useless enemy inflicts wounds, one adorns the body with them and rejoices. Why should suffering harm me when I am diligently striving to accomplish a great purpose?" Thus it is said. Therefore, fighting and winning against the enemy of afflictions is called a hero. Fighting other enemies, even if they are not killed, is attacking something that dies naturally, like killing a corpse. The Bodhicharyavatara says: "Having overcome all suffering, if one subdues the great enemies such as anger, that is called a victor, a hero. The rest are only killers of corpses." Thus it is said. Therefore, it says in that very text: "When dwelling in the midst of a crowd of afflictions, one should endure in a thousand ways. Like a lion in a group of foxes, one should not be subdued by the assembly of afflictions." As it says, do not be subdued by all things that are contrary to the path, and overcome them. The common path of the middling person has been explained. I prostrate with reverence at the feet of the venerable and compassionate ones. Thus, the wheel
