It is said that it will disappear. Even if you try so hard and cannot stop it, do not continue it. Stop it quickly, like drawing on water. Do not do it like drawing on stone. The "Letter to a Friend" says: The mind is like water, earth, and stone; know that drawing on them is like that. Among them, for those with afflictions, the first is supreme, and for those who desire Dharma, it is the last. As it is said, in the aspect of Dharma, it should be the opposite. The "Bodhicharyavatara" also says: To this I should be attached, holding hatred and fighting, such afflictions, except for those who destroy afflictions. Even if I am burned or killed, even if my head is cut off, it is fine. In any way, I should not submit to the enemy of afflictions. So it is said. Geshe Phuchungwa also said: Even though I am overwhelmed by afflictions, I clench my teeth from between my teeth. When Potowa heard this, he said: In that case, stop it quickly. Ordinary enemies, even if driven away once, will occupy other places, gain strength, and come back again. Afflictions are not like that. Once afflictions are eradicated from the root in the continuum, they will not go to other places, nor will they come back again. However, we do not strive to subdue afflictions, and that is why it is like this. The "Bodhicharyavatara" says: Ordinary enemies, even if driven out of the country, will reside and completely occupy other places, and after their power is strengthened, they will return. The way of the enemy of afflictions is not like that. Afflictions, abandoning afflictions with the eye of wisdom, eliminating them from one's own mind, where will they go? Where will they reside and come back to harm me? Foolish me, I have not strived enough. So it is said. Nyukrumpa said: As soon as afflictions arise, do not be lazy, quickly stop them with antidotes. If you cannot stop them, get up and arrange mandalas and offerings, offer them to the lama and yidam, and pray. Focus on that and recite the mantra of the wrathful deity, and they will quietly disappear. Langri Tangpa also said: Just by changing your seat or twisting your neck a few times, they will quietly disappear. He said that he himself seemed to be fighting with afflictions. Also, Gonpawa said: Day and night, guard your own mind. What else is there? Do as he said.

It seems like it's about to come now. When you meet the great Lord Atiśa, even if it's once a day, he would ask, "Have you had good thoughts during this time?" How to abandon these afflictions? The greatest fault is difficult to eradicate and is the basis of all other afflictions, which is ignorance. Therefore, cultivate dependent origination extensively and become skilled in entering and exiting saṃsāra. If you become accustomed to this, then all wrong views, including the five wrong views, will not arise. Anger is the enemy that brings suffering in both this life and the next and destroys the accumulated roots of virtue. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra, "There is no sin like anger." Therefore, do not discriminate in any situation and strive for patience. If this does not arise, even in this life, there will be great happiness. As it is said in the Bodhicaryāvatāra, "Whoever strives to pacify anger will be happy in this life and the next." All previously accumulated virtuous and non-virtuous actions empower the attainment of saṃsāra and increase its power, which is desire and craving. For those in the desire realm, this arises from experiencing the taste of feelings caused by contact with enjoyable objects. Therefore, cultivate and reverse the many faults of ugliness, both external and internal, and attachment to desirable qualities. The great teacher Dignāga said, "Deer, elephants, moths, and fish are destroyed by five desires. If one desire can destroy them, how can those who constantly rely on five desires not be destroyed?" Furthermore, for what is about to arise and is difficult to eradicate, be attached to the four things: gain, fame, praise, and happiness, and strive to counteract displeasure with the opposite of these four things. In general, cultivate the faults of saṃsāra, and in particular, if mindfulness of death becomes crucial, it will be reversed. Pride is the chief obstacle to the arising of the path here and is the cause of becoming a servant, etc., in the next life, so abandon it. The way to abandon it is as it is said in the Suhrllekha, "Old age, sickness, death, and separation from suffering, and likewise, actions are my property, I cannot transcend actions." Thinking like this again and again, one will not become arrogant through the means of counteracting it. Have certainty in truth, the Three Jewels, and the law of karma.
