One should think well and be extremely respectful in learning. How should one learn? Regarding the four causes of falling, the antidote to ignorance is to listen to what is to be learned and understand it. The antidote to carelessness is the mindfulness that does not forget the objects of what to adopt and abandon, and the awareness that examines the three doors of body, speech, and mind separately from time to time, knowing what to engage in, good or bad, and the shame of avoiding wrongdoing out of consideration for oneself or the Dharma, and the embarrassment of avoiding wrongdoing out of consideration for others' blame, and the caution of being afraid of the consequences of wrongdoing, and so on. The antidote to disrespect is to respect the teacher and his precepts, and those who practice the same as the pure conduct. The antidote to abundant afflictions is to examine one's own mind and diligently rely on the antidote to whichever affliction is most prevalent. If one does not make such efforts, thinking that it is not a big deal to violate just this little bit, and thus becomes lax about the precepts, one will only obtain suffering. The Vinaya Sutra, the "Distinction," says: Whoever thinks lightly of the compassionate teachings of the teacher and slightly transgresses them, will thereby obtain suffering and dependence on others, just as cutting down a bamboo grove damages a mango grove. In this world, someone may violate a great command of the king and be spared punishment several times, but if one violates the Sugata's teachings improperly, one will fall into the animal realm, like the leaf worm of the Ela tree. Therefore, one should strive not to be defiled by faults and transgressions, and even if one is slightly defiled, one should not leave it unattended, but should strive to confess and purify the transgressions and sins as stated in the scriptures. The Brahma Pariprccha Sutra says: One should rely on the training, one should be diligent from the heart in this, one should not abandon it, and one should not destroy it even for the sake of one's life, one should always diligently abide, one should enter into discipline. And the Sutra of Perfect Morality says: Monks, it is better to die having abandoned life, but it is not so if morality is broken and destroyed. Why is that? Because abandoning life and dying will only end the life of this very birth, but breaking and destroying morality will separate one from the good realms for hundreds of thousands of kalpas, abandoning happiness, and experiencing great falls.

Thus, as instructed with reason, it should be protected even at the cost of one's life. If not, one should think that it is meaningless for me to shave my head and wear robes, as it is said in the King of Samadhi Sutra: "Having become ordained in this Buddha's teaching, one engages in extremely sinful deeds, regarding wealth and grain as essential, and being attached to riding horses, cattle, and chariots. Those who have no diligence in what should be learned, why do they shave their heads?" Therefore, if one wishes to escape from conditioned existence and go to the city of liberation, but the foot of discipline is broken, not only will one not be able to go, but one will return to samsara and be destroyed by all sufferings, which is explained with an example. The King of Samadhi Sutra says: "If a person is greatly harassed by many thieves and robbers, and tries to escape and run in order to survive, but his foot is not good and he cannot walk or run, just as those thieves seize and destroy him. Similarly, a foolish person whose discipline is broken, although he wants to escape from conditioned things, he cannot escape because his discipline is broken, and he is utterly destroyed by old age and death." Thus it is said. Therefore, in that sutra it is said: "Wearing the clothes of a householder, the precepts that I have taught, at that time those monks will also not have those precepts." Thus, at this time when the five complete precepts spoken to lay practitioners are not even possessed by monks, striving for the precepts is especially fruitful, so one should strive. In that same sutra it is said: "For countless eons, as many as the sands of the Ganges, with a joyful mind, offering food and drink, umbrellas, banners, and garlands of lamps, serving countless Buddhas. But when the true Dharma is decaying and the Sugata's teachings are disappearing, practicing one precept day and night, this merit is far superior to that." Therefore. Furthermore, even if a transgression occurs, thinking that it is enough to confess, if one engages without the intention to refrain from doing it again in the future, it is like saying that it is enough to remedy it later and eating poison, as the Maitreya Lion's Roar Sutra says: "Maitreya, in the future, in the last five hundred years of the future, the Bo
