It is said that after giving a handful of cooked peas, she said she didn't want them and complained unhappily that they were just peas. Similarly, whatever worldly pleasures we see, hear, and remember, that is also the world, that is also the world, that is suffering. It's like saying that there's no way to avoid it, you have to vomit. Thus, thinking about wandering in samsara from beginningless time, one feels sadness and weariness; thinking about having to wander now, one develops a mind of fear and dread, not just in words. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "Such is samsara, in the realms of gods and humans, hell-beings, ghosts, and animals, a good rebirth is not good, birth is, a vessel of many harms, the wise should know." Therefore, one must avert birth in samsara, the root of all harms. This also depends on averting the two, karma and afflictions. And of these two, if there are no afflictions, no matter how much karma there is, it will not lead to birth; if there are afflictions, even if there is no previously accumulated karma, it will be accumulated immediately, so one must destroy afflictions. Destroying afflictions also depends on practicing the path without error and completely. There are two points here: what kind of basis averts samsara, and what kind of path, when practiced, averts it. The first is, as it says in the Letter to a Friend: "Holding wrong views and being an animal, being a hungry ghost and being born in hell, having no teachings of the Victorious One, being born as a barbarian in a border region, being stupid, mute, and deaf, being born in any of the long-lived gods, these are called the eight faults of unfree states, having obtained freedom from them, strive to avert birth." Therefore, one must avert samsara at this time of obtaining leisure, because there is no opportunity to avert it when there is no leisure, as has been said before. The great yogi said, "Now is the time to distinguish between livestock and non-livestock." Potowa also said, "Having wandered for so long without returning on your own, you will not return on your own now, so you must avert samsara. The time to avert samsara is now, at this time of obtaining leisure." Moreover, living at home has many obstacles to practicing Dharma and accumulates many faults.
